Abstract

A display device including a display layer displaying a black or white color according to an applied voltage, a transparent and non-transparent electrode that are disposed to sandwich the display layer, and a TFT driving circuit capable of applying any given voltage between the pair of electrodes. Also provided is a connection destination switching switch capable of switching the connection destination of the entire transparent electrode to an earth terminal or a connector power source terminal of an external power source connector. With this configuration, a voltage can be applied between the pair of electrodes without using the TFT driving circuit. Accordingly, if the TFT driving circuit fails to operate due to trouble caused by the displaying of information which is not permitted to be shown to others, a voltage can be applied to the display layer so that the displayed information can be erased.

Claims (24)

1. A display device comprising:

a memory type display including:

a display layer adapted to display an image by displaying predetermined colors according to an applied voltage; and

multiple picture electrodes and a common electrode sandwiching the display layer;

a driving circuit electrically coupled to the multiple picture electrodes and adapted to apply a predetermined voltage between the multiple picture electrodes and the common electrode so that an electric potential of the multiple picture electrodes is controlled and a predetermined image is displayed on the display layer; and

an image erasing circuit directly electrically coupled between the common electrode and a power source, the image erasing circuit being adapted to selectively apply a voltage between the multiple picture electrodes and the common electrode when the driving circuit is broken and cannot apply the predetermined voltage so that the image would otherwise remain displayed on the display layer, the image erasing circuit directly connecting the power source to the common electrode independent of the driving circuit, wherein:

the power source is an external power source and the image erasing circuit includes a switching section adapted to switch a connection destination of the common electrode to a terminal for supplying a reference electric potential or a power source terminal of the external power source.

2. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein:

the switching section is a slide switch.

3. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein:

the switching section includes a sensor for detecting whether the switching section is electrically connected with the external power source, and when the sensor detects that the switching section is electrically connected with the external power source, the switching section is brought into connection with the power source terminal of the external power source, and when the sensor detects that the switching section is not connected with the external power source, the switching section is brought into connection with the terminal for supplying a reference electric potential.

4. The display device according to claim 1 , wherein:

the display layer contains charged particles and a dispersion medium.

5. A display device comprising:

a memory type display including:

a display layer adapted to display an image by displaying predetermined colors according to tan applied voltage; and

multiple picture electrodes and a common electrode sandwiching the display layer;

a driving circuit electrically coupled to the multiple picture electrodes and adapted to apply a predetermined voltage between the multiple picture electrodes and the common electrode so that an electric potential of the multiple picture electrodes is controlled and a predetermined image is displayed on the display layer; and

an image erasing circuit directly electrically coupled between the common electrode and a power source, the image erasing circuit being adapted to selectively apply a voltage between the multiple picture electrodes and the common electrode when the driving circuit is broken and cannot apply the predetermined voltage so that the image would otherwise remain displayed on the display layer, the image erasing circuit directly connecting the power source to the common electrode independent of the driving circuit, wherein:

the power source is a driving power source of the display device and the image erasing circuit includes a switching section adapted to switch a connection destination of the common electrode to a terminal for supplying a reference electric potential or a power source terminal of the driving power source.

6. An image erasing method for erasing an image displayed on a display device layer in a display device in which a memory type display including a display layer adapted to display an image by displaying predetermined colors according to an applied voltage and multiple picture electrodes and a common electrode are disposed so as to sandwich the display layer, the method comprising:

causing a driving circuit to apply a predetermined voltage between the multiple picture electrodes and the common electrode so that an electric potential of the multiple picture electrodes is controlled and a predetermined image is displayed on the display layer; and

selectively erasing an image displayed on the display device layer by directly electrically coupling the common electrode to a power source via an image erasing circuit and applying a voltage between the multiple picture electrodes and the common electrode using the image erasing circuit independent of the driving circuit if the driving circuit is broken and cannot apply the predetermined voltage so that the image would otherwise remain displayed on the display device layer, wherein:

the power source is an external power source and the image erasing circuit includes a switching section adapted to switch a connection destination of the common electrode to a terminal for supplying a reference electric potential or a power source terminal of the external power source.
