Abstract

A novel olefin textile fabric knitted woven and non-woven that in one aspect of the invention is disperse dyed to a light, medium or deep solid shade. In another aspect, the textile fabrics of the present invention are manufactured using olefin yarns that contain variable amounts of dye acceptor additives. A fabric with more than one tone of a color is dyed in a single dye bath. The fabrics and yarn using this invention can be processed using conventional spinning, weaving, knitting, web forming machines and will dye using existing dyeing and finishing systems. This invention is of particular value in the apparel and home furnishings industry.

Claims (11)

1. A disperse dyeable apparel fiber, yarn or filament comprising a melt blend of

(a) a polyolefin and a compound of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), and maleic anhydride,

(b) said melt blend being formed by mixing within an extruder, in advance of extrusion of elements of said fiber, yarn or filament, to effect uniformly distributed grafting of said amorphous PETG in said polyolefin,

(c) the extruded elements of said fiber, yarn or filament being of a size suitable for use in apparel and home furnishings, and

(d) at least approximately 5% of said melt blend comprising PETG grafted in said polyolefin.

2. A disperse dyeable fiber, yarn or filament according to claim 1 , wherein

(a) said compound comprises approximately 50% polyolefin, approximately 48% amorphous PETG and approximately 2% maleic anhydride.

3. A disperse dyeable fiber, yarn or filament according to claim 2 , wherein

(a) said melt blend comprises approximately 90% polyolefin and approximately 10% of said compound.

4. A disperse dyeable fiber, yarn or filament according to claim 2 , wherein

(a) said compound is in pellet form and is added to an extruder during extrusion of said fiber, yarn or filament.
