Abstract

The present invention relates to methods for converting plant cell wall polysaccharides into one or more products, comprising: treating the plant cell wall polysaccharides with an effective amount of a spent whole fermentation broth of a recombinant microorganism, wherein the recombinant microorganism expresses one or more heterologous genes encoding enzymes which degrade or convert the plant cell wall polysaccharides into the one or more products. The present invention also relates to methods for producing an organic substance, comprising: (a) saccharifying plant cell wall polysaccharides with an effective amount of a spent whole fermentation broth of a recombinant microorganism, wherein the recombinant microorganism expresses one or more heterologous genes encoding enzymes which degrade or convert the plant cell wall polysaccharides into saccharified material; (b) fermenting the saccharified material of step (a) with one or more fermenting microoganisms; and (c) recovering the organic substance from the fermentation.

Claims (9)

1. A method for degrading or converting plant cell wall polysaccharides into glucose, comprising: treating the plant cell wall polysaccharides with an effective amount of a spent whole fermentation broth of a recombinant Trichoderma reesei cell comprising a heterologous polynucleotide encoding the beta-glucosidase of SEQ ID NO: 27, wherein the Trichoderma reesei cell comprises one or more native genes encoding enzymes that degrade or convert plant cell wall polysaccharides and the spent whole fermentation broth degrades or converts the plant cell wall polysaccharides into glucose.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Trichoderma reesei cell further comprises one or more heterologous polynucleotides encoding a cellulase, an endoglucanase, a cellobiohydrolase, or a combination thereof.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is a pretreatment process.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is a step in a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process (SSF).

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is a step in a hybrid hydrolysis and fermentation process (HHF).

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising recovering the glucose obtained from the degraded or converted plant cell wall polysaccharides.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plant cell wall polysaccharides are also degraded or converted to xylose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, or a combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spent whole fermentation broth is supplemented with one or more enzyme activities not expressed by the recombinant microorganism to improve the degradation or the conversion of the plant cell wall polysaccharides.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Trichoderma reesei cell is Trichoderma reesei RutC30.
