Abstract

A method is provided for sealing a through-fitting around a cable. The method involves: passing a cable through the through-fitting; compressing a seal in the through-fitting around the cable within the through-fitting; and extruding a sealant around the cable within the through-fitting. Both compression of the seal against the cable and extrusion of the sealant around the cable within the through-fitting are performed by causing a cap on the through-fitting to move axially. Causing the cap to move axially may comprise turning the cap to permit threads of the cap to move along mating threads of the through-fitting.

Claims (53)

1. A method for sealing a through-fitting around a cable, the method comprising:

passing a cable through a bore in the through-fitting and providing a chamber outside of the bore and containing a sealant;

compressing a seal in the through-fitting against a circumference of the cable such that the compressed seal contacts substantially an entirety of the circumference of the cable to form a moisture seal there around; and,

extruding the sealant from the chamber into the bore around the cable;

wherein both compressing the seal and extruding the sealant are performed by causing a cap on the through-fitting to move axially; and

wherein the sealant remains in the chamber that is outside of the bore, until the sealant is extruded into the bore by the axial movement of the cap.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein causing the cap to move axially comprises turning the cap to permit threads of the cap to move along mating threads of the through-fitting.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein causing the cap to move axially results in decreasing a volume of the chamber, thereby extruding the sealant from the chamber, through at least one passage and into the bore.

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein the chamber comprises an annular chamber defined between the cap and an outer end of the through-fitting.

5. A method according to claim 3 wherein the at least one passage comprises one or more axially extending grooves in the through-fitting.

6. A method according to claim 3 wherein the at least one passage comprises one or more apertures in the through-fitting.

7. A method according to claim 3 comprising providing a sleeve disposed within a region surrounding the cable, wherein causing the cap to move axially comprises moving the sleeve axially into the chamber.

8. A method according to claim 7 wherein the at least one passage comprises one or more apertures through the sleeve.

9. A method for sealing a through-fitting around a cable, the method comprising:

passing a cable through the through-fitting;

compressing a seal in the through-fitting against the cable;

extruding a sealant around the cable within the through-fitting;

wherein both compressing the seal and extruding the sealant are performed by causing a cap on the through-fitting to move axially;

providing a chamber containing the sealant and at least one passace communicating between the chamber and a region surrounding the cable, wherein causing the cap to move axially results in decreasing a volume of the chamber, thereby extruding the sealant from the chamber, through the at least one passage and into the region surrounding the cable;

providing a sleeve disposed within the region surrounding the cable, wherein causing the cap to move axially comprises moving the sleeve axially into the chamber and wherein the at least one passage comprises one or more apertures through the sleeve; and

providing at least one burst member located to block the at least one passage and rupturing the burst member, thereby allowing extrusion of the sealant through the at least one passage and into the region surrounding the cable.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the burst member comprises a thin plastic member that is integrally formed with the sleeve.

11. A method for sealing a through-fitting around a cable, the method comprising:

passing a cable through the through-fitting;

compressing a seal in the through-fitting against the cable;

extruding a sealant around the cable within the through-fitting;

wherein both compressing the seal and extruding the sealant are performed by causing a cap on the through-fitting to move axially;

providing a chamber containing the sealant and at least one passage communicating between the chamber and a region surrounding the cable, wherein causing the cap to move axially results in decreasing a volume of the chamber, thereby extruding the sealant from the chamber, through the at least one passage and into the region surrounding the cable; and

providing at least one burst member located to block the at least one passage and rupturing the burst member, thereby allowing extrusion of the sealant through the at least one passage and into the region surrounding the cable.

12. A method according to claim 3 comprising providing a piston slidably disposed within a cylinder and wherein the chamber is defined between an end of the piston and the cylinder.

13. A method according to claim 1 wherein the sealant comprises a silicone grease.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the seal is annular-shaped and has a central aperture and wherein passing the cable through the through-fitting comprises passing the cable through the central aperture of the seal.

15. A method according to claim 14 comprising providing a sleeve disposed within the region surrounding the cable, the sleeve having an end surface at least a portion of which is inwardly-angled and wherein causing the cap to move axially comprises moving the sleeve axially within the region surrounding the cable.

16. A method for sealing a through-fitting around a cable, the method comprising:

passing a cable through the through-fitting;

compressing a seal in the through-fitting against the cable; and,

extruding a sealant around the cable within the through-fitting;

wherein both compressing the seal and extruding the sealant are performed by causing a cap on the through-fitting to move axially;

wherein the seal is annular-shaped and has a central aperture and wherein passing the cable through the through-fitting comprises passing the cable through the central aperture of the seal; and

providing a sleeve disposed within the region surrounding the cable, the sleeve having an end surface at least a portion of which is inwardly-angled and wherein causing the cap to move axially comprises moving the sleeve axially within the region surrounding the cable;

wherein causing the cap to move axially comprises moving the sleeve from a first position wherein the seal is not substantially compressed to a second position wherein the inwardly-angled portion of the end surface of the sleeve compresses at least a portion of the seal radially inwardly against the cable.

17. A method for sealing a through-fitting around a cable, the method comprising:

providing a sealant filled chamber containing a sealant and at least one passage communicating between the chamber and a bore that extends through the through-fitting, wherein the chamber is outside of the bore;

passing a cable through the bore; and tightening a cap onto the through-fitting;

wherein tightening the cap onto the through-fitting comprises decreasing a volume of the chamber, thereby extruding the sealant from the chamber through the at least one passage and into the bore; and,

wherein the sealant remains in the chamber that is outside of the bore, until the sealant is extruded into the bore by the tightening of the cap.

18. A method according to claim 17 wherein tightening the cap onto the through-fitting comprises compressing a seal against the cable.

19. A method for sealing a through-fitting around a cable, the method comprising:

providing a bore that extends through the through-fitting and a sleeve disposed within the bore, the sleeve having an end surface at least a portion of which is inwardly-angled;

passing a cable through the bore;

tightening a cap onto the through-fitting;

wherein tightening the cap onto the through-fitting comprises moving the sleeve axially wittin the bore from a first position where the seal is not substantially compressed to a second position where the inwardly-angled portion of the end surface of the sleeve compresses at least a portion of the seal radially inwardly against the cable; and

providing a sealant-filled chamber within the through-fitting and at least one passage communicating between the chamber and the bore, wherein tightening the cap onto the through-fitting comprises decreasing a volume of the chamber, thereby extruding sealant from the chamber, through the at least one passage and into the bore.
