Abstract

A computer network and method for feeding animals in a feedlot, in which discretion and direct control over the various suboperations of the feed ration assignment and delivery process are distributed among the individual operators in the system, while the feedlot manager is capable of indirectly monitoring the performance of the various suboperations through use of a satellite based global positioning system.

Claims (29)

1. An animal feedlot management system, comprising:

a database to store feedlot information representative of an animal feedlot and objects within the feedlot;

a first display screen to visually display the feedlot and positions of the objects within the feedlot based upon the feedlot information from the database;

a vehicle GPS receiver to determine a position of a vehicle;

an information system to transmit vehicle information, including positional information of the vehicle and the state of operation of the vehicle, to the database;

a local information acquisition subsystem for acquiring coordinate information regarding an object in the feedlot, including animals in the feedlot, enabling viewing of the object in the first display screen;

a processor configured to update the feedlot information with the coordinate information specifying the relative position of the vehicle to at least one other object within the feedlot, including animals, and configured to generate a 3-D geometric model of the feedlot and objects therein including the vehicle; and

a second display screen within the feedlot vehicle, configured to display the 3-D geometric model, for purposes of navigating the vehicle and managing at least one additional feedlot management action including at least one of feeding an animal and treating the animal.

2. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein the information system receives positional information from the database.

3. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein the first display screen is located at another position separate from the position of the vehicle.

4. The feedlot management system of claim 3 , wherein the first display screen is located in a feed mill on the feedlot.

5. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second display screens display the relative position of the vehicle to the feedlot in real-time.

6. The feedlot management system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second display screens also display feed ration delivery data for the vehicle.

7. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the objects on the second display screen is the vehicle.

8. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein the second display screen displays the relative position of the vehicle to the feedlot in real-time.

9. The feedlot management system of claim 8 , wherein the second display screen also displays feed ration delivery data for the vehicle.

10. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , further including a reference GPS transmitter at a known location relative to the feedlot for use in error correction of positional information received by the vehicle GPS receiver.

11. The feedlot management system of claim 10 , wherein the reference GPS transmitter is located within the feedlot.

12. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein the processor updates the feedlot information with the coordinate information specifying the relative position of the vehicle to at least one other object within the feedlot in real-time.

13. The feedlot management system of claim 1 , wherein the second display screen visually displays the relative position of the vehicle to at least one other object within the feedlot in real-time.

14. A method for managing an animal feedlot comprising:

determining, using a vehicle GPS receiver, a position of a feedlot vehicle;

receiving electronic signals indicative of the coordinates of the feedlot vehicle;

processing data representing the coordinates of the feedlot vehicle;

providing a local information acquisition subsystem for acquiring coordinate information regarding an object in the feedlot, enabling viewing of the object in a first display screen;

generating electronic signals indicative of locations of objects within the feedlot, the objects including the feedlot vehicle and at least one other object, including an animal; and

generating, by a computer processor, a 3-D geometric model of the feedlot and objects therein, including the animal and the feedlot vehicle, displayed on a second display screen, within the feedlot vehicle, for purposes of navigating the feedlot vehicle and managing at least one additional feedlot management action including at least one of feeding the animal and treating the animal.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of generating the second display screen based on the electronic signals of the locations, wherein the second display screen shows a map of the feedlot and the objects within the feedlot, including the feedlot vehicle.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising periodically repeating the receiving, processing, and generating electronic signals steps with sufficient frequency to track movement of the feedlot vehicle at real-time within the feedlot.
