Abstract

Devices employing electroactive polymer actuators are disclosed. The devices include pumps, valves, cameras (where electroactive polymer actuators control either one or both of zoom and focus), vibrators (for inclusion in cell phones, game console controls, etc.) and audio speakers. These devices advantageously incorporate the actuator configurations descried. The devices generally incorporate a diaphragm-type actuation having a central section of material that is less flexible than adjacent material.

Claims (16)

1. An electroactive polymer transducer driven camera comprising:

a frame, a stable interface positioned centrally with respect to the frame, and electroactive polymer material stretched between the frame and the stable interface to form a diaphragm;

a lens unit positioned adjacent the stable interface;

wherein the motion of the diaphragm upon application of voltage changes the position of the lens unit to adjust the focus of the camera.

2. The camera of claim 1 , wherein a leaf spring biases the electroactive material.

3. The camera of claim 2 , wherein the spring is a selected from a leaf spring and a coil spring.

4. The camera of claim 1 , further comprising a zoom stage.

5. The camera of claim 4 , wherein travel of the zoom stage is provided by an electroactive polymer assembly.

6. The camera of claim 5 , wherein the travel is provided by a plurality of electroactive polymer assemblies connected in series.

7. The camera of claim 6 , wherein the series-connected electroactive polymer assemblies comprise planar configurations.

8. The camera of claim 6 , wherein the electroactive polymer assemblies are positioned substantially perpendicular to a lens unit of the zoom stage.

9. The cameral of claim 8 , wherein the electroactive polymer assemblies are translated by connection of successive output bars.

10. The camera of claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm comprises a frustum configuration.

11. The camera of claim 1 , wherein the diaphragm comprises a double frustum configuration.

12. The camera of claim 11 , wherein one side of the double frustum diaphragm biases the other side of the double frustum diaphragm.

13. The camera of claim 11 , wherein one side of the double frustum diaphragm functions to sense the position of the lens unit.
