Abstract

The present invention relates to cables made of twisted conductor pairs. More specifically, the present invention relates to twisted pair communication cables for high-speed data communications applications. A twisted pair including at least two conductors extends along a generally longitudinal axis, with an insulation surrounding each of the conductors. The conductors are twisted generally longitudinally along the axis. A cable includes at least two twisted pairs and a filler. At least two of the cables are positioned along generally parallel axes for at least a predefined distance. The cables are configured to efficiently and accurately propagate high-speed data signals by, among other functions, limiting at least a subset of the following: impedance deviations, signal attenuation, and alien crosstalk along the predefined distance.

Claims (14)

1. A cable arrangement, comprising:

a) a first cable including at least one twisted pair of conductors, one or more non-conductive fillers, and a jacket, the jacket surrounding the at least one twisted pair of conductors and the one or more non-conductive fillers, the one or more non-conductive fillers being configured to form a helical ridge in the jacket;

b) a second cable twisted about the first cable, the second cable including at least one twisted pair of conductors, one or more non-conductive fillers, and a jacket, the jacket of the second cable surrounding the at least one twisted pair of conductors and the one or more non-conductive fillers, the one or more non-conductive fillers of the second cable being configured to form a helical ridge in the jacket of the second cable;

c) wherein the first and second cables contact one another along portions of the helical ridges of the first and second cables such that air pockets are created between the first and second cables.

2. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cables contact one another only along the portions of the helical ridges of the first and second cables.

3. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the air pockets space the first and second cables at a distance apart from one another to reduce alien crosstalk between the cables.

4. The cable of claim 1 , wherein the twisted pair of conductors defines a diameter, and wherein the ridges of the first and second cables project radially outwardly from a main body of the jacket a distance equal to at least one quarter the diameter of the twisted pair of conductors.

5. The cable arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the at least one twisted pair of conductors in each of the first and second cables includes a plurality of twisted pairs of conductors; and the one or more non-conductive fillers include a first non-conductive filler and a second non-conductive filler, at least one of the first and second non-conductive fillers defining pockets for separating each of the pairs of the plurality of twisted pairs of conductors.

6. The cable of claim 5 , wherein the first and second non-conductive fillers are an integral construction.

7. The cable of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the first and second non-conductive fillers twists along the length of the cable.

8. The cable of claim 5 , wherein the first non-conductive filler includes a plurality of legs, the pockets that separate the twisted pairs of conductors being located between the legs.

9. The cable of claim 8 , wherein at least some of the legs have different lengths, and wherein the second non-conductive filler is located at an end of one of the legs.

10. The cable of claim 5 , wherein the at least one of the first and second non-conductive fillers defines three or more pockets for separating the pairs of the plurality of twisted pairs of conductors.

11. The cable of claim 5 , wherein each of the pairs of the plurality of twisted pairs of conductors is located within a circular cross-sectional area when positioned within the pockets, and wherein at least a portion of one of the first and second non-conductive fillers is positioned beyond the cross-sectional area.
