Abstract

A dock leveler for bridging the gap between a loading dock and the bed of a vehicle parked at the loading docket. The dock leveler is configured for installation on the top of the dock and is designed to rotate from a vertically-stored position to at least one lowered, operative position. In some embodiments, the dock leveler can be lowered either for normal operation so that the deck rests on the bed of the vehicle or it can be lowered to accommodate an end-loading condition. The docket leveler has a horizontally translatable ramp.

Claims (15)

1. A dock leveler, comprising:

a base assembly configured to be installed on a substantially level top surface of a dock;

a vertically-storing deck assembly being pivotally attached to the base assembly; and

a ramp assembly pivotally connected to the deck assembly, wherein the ramp assembly is horizontally translatable during pivoting of the deck assembly.

2. The dock leveler according to claim 1 , wherein the deck assembly is configured to pivot between a vertically-stored position and a range of operative positions.

3. The dock leveler according to claim 2 , wherein the range of operative positions includes at least one above-dock position, at least one below-dock position, and a substantially horizontal dock level position.

4. The dock leveler according to claim 2 , wherein the range of positions ranges from approximately 6 inches above dock level to approximately 8 inches below dock level.

5. The dock leveler according to claim 1 , wherein the deck assembly comprises a deck and a lip pivotally attached to the deck.

6. The dock leveler according to claim 1 , wherein:

the base assembly comprises a base plate assembly configured to be attached to the top surface of the dock, the base plate assembly having a forward end and a rear end, the forward end being nearer an edge of the dock than the rear end when the dock leveler is installed on the dock;

the deck assembly has a forward end and a rear end, the deck assembly forward end being farther from the base assembly than the deck assembly rear end; and

the dock leveler has a length measured from the rear end of the base plate assembly to the deck assembly forward end.

7. The dock leveler according to claim 1 , further comprising a lock mechanism to lock the deck assembly from pivotal movement when in the deck assembly is in a stored position, the lock mechanism being attached at one end to the base assembly and at the other end to the deck assembly.

8. The dock leveler according to claim 1 , wherein the deck assembly has a stored position and at least one operative position, and wherein the dock leveler further comprises a spring assembly for upwardly biasing the deck assembly when the deck assembly is in the stored position and downwardly biasing the deck assembly with the deck assembly is lowered to the at least one operative position.

9. The dock leveler according to claim 1 , wherein the ramp assembly has an inclined ramp plate to enable a transition over a pivot axis of the vertically-storing deck assembly.
