Abstract

A Straight-Through-Processing (STP) trading platform provides a fully electronic and seamless solution to substantially all aspects of the trading cycle for fixed income instruments and other financial instruments. In an exemplary embodiment, all participants to a trade transaction have access to computer software that facilitates trade order management, trade order generation, trade execution (including electronic axes), trade allocation, allocation acknowledgement, trade confirmation, acquisition of settlement instructions, and the generation of progress reports based on specific metrics criteria. In said exemplary embodiment, the STP trading platform includes computer software modules including at least an account management module and an electronic trading module to handle the various stages of executing a trade, confirming the trade, and facilitating settlement of the trade.

Claims (51)

1. A computer implemented system for generating trading reports for users based on user defined metrics comprising:

a trade execution platform communicatively connected to a plurality of customers and a plurality of dealers, the trade execution platform including one or more server systems operative with programming to display graphical trading screens and receive and process trade inquiries and perform trade execution;

a trade history database including one or more storage devices communicatively connected to the trade execution platform and adapted to store data corresponding to each trade inquiry and each trade execution wherein the data for each trade inquiry and each trade execution is linked to an associated customer or dealer; and

a report generation processor operative with programming to:

receive metrics criteria from the user relating to trade data;

retrieve trade data from a database in accordance with the metrics criteria;

aggregate the retrieved trade data in accordance with the metrics criteria;

generate a report for the user based on the aggregated trade data; and

display the generated report for the user in a graphical user interface.

2. A computer implemented method of generating a user volume report relating to a plurality of dealers, the method comprising:

executing one or more trades on a trade execution platform communicatively connected to a plurality of customers and the plurality of dealers, the trade execution platform enabling auction-based trade inquiries and trade execution;

storing the one or more trades in a trade history database communicatively connected to the trade execution platform for storing data corresponding to each trade inquiry and each trade execution wherein the data for each trade inquiry and each trade execution is linked to an associated customer or dealer;

receiving from the user a listing consisting of a subset of dealers from the plurality of dealers relating to the user's trade data;

retrieving trade data from a database relating to the subset of dealers consisting of the total number of trades and the number of successful trades;

aggregating the retrieved trade data to generate a dealer performance metric;

generating a report for the user based on the aggregated trade data; and

displaying the generated report classified by volume and the dealer performance metric for the user in a graphical user interface.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an account database storing settlement instruction sets for at least a portion of the plurality of customers, and wherein the server systems of the trade execution platform are operative with programming to perform straight-through-processing of executed trades.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the straight-through-processing of executed trades includes the retrieval of one of the settlement instruction sets and enriching an allocated trade record with settlement instructions contained in the settlement instruction set.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein in order to perform straight-through-processing of executed trades the server systems of the trade execution platform are operative with programming to:

store a block trade record including details of the block trade executed by the associated customer and the associated dealer;

generate an allocated trade record for each of the account allocations received from the customer, each of the allocated trade records being associated with the block trade record;

receive an indication from the dealer that the allocated trade records are confirmed;

enrich the allocated trade records by incorporating one of the settlement instruction sets into each of the allocated trade records.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the server systems of the trade execution platform are further operative with programming to transmit each of the enriched allocated trade records to an appropriate clearing institution.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the server systems of the trade execution platform are further operative with programming to transmit each of the enriched allocated trade records to the customer or the dealer.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein programming operative on the trade execution platform is server-based programming that operates in conjunction with programming on a customer computer system and dealer computer system which uses client-based programming to achieve a client-server environment.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the server-based programming provides core trading, confirmation and settlement functionality and the client-based programming provides graphical interfaces viewable on the customer computer system and dealer computer system to enable the customer and dealer to interact with the server-based programming of the trade execution system.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the graphical interfaces enable the customer to generate trade inquiries and transmit the trade inquiries to one or more dealers.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the graphical interfaces enable the dealer to receive the trade inquiries and generate firm prices in response to the trade inquiries and transmit firm prices to the customer.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the programming operable on the trade execution system includes an account management module for permitting the customer to manage the customer's account records, a back office management module for permitting the customer and the dealer to access current and historical trade details, and an electronic trading module for effecting trades between the customer and the dealer.

13. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

storing one or more account information records associated with one or more settlement instruction sets in an account database;

storing a block trade record including details of the block trade executed by one of the plurality of customers and one of the plurality of dealers;

generating an allocated trade record associated with the block trade record for each of the account allocations received from the customer;

enriching the allocated trade records by incorporating one of the settlement instruction sets into each of the allocated trade records.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising generating an electronic trade confirmation for each of the allocated trade records.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the electronic trade confirmation includes at least trade details associated with the allocated trade record and a settlement instruction set.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the electronic trade confirmation meets applicable government regulations.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the electronic trade confirmation is configured to meet Rule 10b-b of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

18. The method of claim 2 , further comprising generating trade inquiries and transmitting the trade inquiries to the plurality of dealers.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising generating firm prices in response to the trade inquiries and transmitting firm prices to the one or more customers.

20. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving customer-initiated trade inquiries including pre-allocation of sub-accounts directed to the plurality of dealers;

transmitting the customer-initiated trade inquiries to a dealer computer system of the plurality of dealers;

receiving a trade price from at least one of the dealer computer systems;

transmitting the trade price to a customer computer system;

receiving from the customer computer system an indication that the trade price is accepted; and

executing a block trade at the accepted trade price.

21. The method of claim 2 , further comprising generating an electronic trade confirmation for each of the allocated trade records.

22. The method of claim 13 , further comprising transmitting each of the enriched allocated trade records to an appropriate clearing institution.
