2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lifter comprises an inflatable bladder.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lifter comprises a mechanical arm and a plate attached thereto.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lifter is pneumatically operated.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mattress has a first portion having a first thickness and a second portion having a second thickness that is smaller than the first thickness.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the lifter engages the first portion of the mattress.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the lifter lifts at least part of the first portion above an uppermost level of the deck.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lifter is actuated when an evacuation signal is received by the system.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the mattress lifted off of the deck by the lifter comprises a foot end of the mattress.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lifter is actuated in response to a button on the bed being pressed.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lifter is actuated in response to a fire alarm.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the deck is a step-deck having a recess and the lifter is situated in the recess of the step deck.

13. The system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one handle coupled to the sleeve and the handle being grippable to pull the sleeve, the mattress, and the patient off of the deck when the lifter is actuated.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein pulling the at least one handle results in the sleeve tightening about the mattress and the patient.

15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising straps to secure the patient on the mattress.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the straps engage loops formed in a side of the mattress.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising handles coupled to the straps and movable to pull the straps to secure the patient on the mattress.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve has a perimeter further comprising:

a tightener extending along at least a portion of the perimeter of the sleeve and configured to tighten the sleeve about the mattress and the patient, further comprising and

a handle coupled to the tightener.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tightener comprises a band extending along at least a portion of the sleeve perimeter.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve is constructed of a material comprising at least one of a mesh, a fabric, and a netting.

21. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tightener comprises an elastomeric material.

22. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve has a foot end and the handle is coupled to the tightener adjacent the foot end of the sleeve.

23. The system of claim 1 , wherein the deck being movable between a generally horizontal use position and an inclined position that further facilitates removal of the mattress from the deck.

24. The system of claim 23 , wherein the deck of the patient support device is a step-deck and mattress is configured to mate with the step-deck of the patient support device.

25. The system of claim 23 , wherein the handle is configured such that an operator can lift the handle in order to lift a portion of the mattress from the deck.
