Abstract

Methods, apparatuses, and systems are presented for conducting a point-to-point (PPP) session relating to establishing a PPP session involving at least a local node and a remote node, wherein the local node comprises a data plane for handling transfer of data for the PPP session at the local node, and wherein the local node comprises a first control plane for controlling operations of the data plane, replicating at least one portion of information accessed by the first control plane, such that the at least one portion of information may be accessed by a second control plane, and switching from the first control plane to the second control plane, such that the second control plane controls operations of the data plane, wherein the second control plane accesses the at least one portion of information replicated from the first control plane, wherein the data plane is capable of continuing to handle transfer of data for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane.

Claims (47)

1. A method for conducting a point-to-point (PPP) session comprising:

establishing a PPP session involving at least a local node and a remote node, wherein the local node comprises a data plane for handling transfer of data for the PPP session at the local node, and wherein the local node comprises a first control plane for controlling operations of the data plane;

replicating a portion of PPP session information accessed by the first control plane to a second control plane of the local node, the second control plane comprising first components that operate concurrently with the first control plane and at least one second component that begins operation following a switch over from the first control plane to the second control plane, switching from the first control plane to the second control plane, wherein the first components of the second control plane direct operation of the data plane in accordance with the portion of information prior to operation of the at least one second component;

detecting a possible disconnection of the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane; and

terminating the PPP session in response to detecting the possible disconnection, and

wherein the data plane maintains a transfer of data for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second component includes a routing module for routing network layer communications supported by the PPP session.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the portion of information includes a portion of data relating to each active PPP session controlled by the first control plane.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second control plane is configured to recreate a portion of data not replicated from the first control plane.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the portion of data not replicated from the first control plane includes PPP stack information containing PPP control packets.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of:

receiving a PPP control packet for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane; and

terminating the PPP session in response to the PPP control packet.

7. The method of claim 1 where the possible disconnection of the PPP session is detected if a PPP ECHO response is not received.

8. An apparatus for conducting a point-to-point (PPP) session comprising:

a data plane for handling transfer of data for a PPP session;

a first control plane for controlling operations of the data plane;

a second control plane configured to access a portion of PPP session information replicated from the first control plane;

wherein the second control plane comprises first components that operate concurrently with the first control plane and at least one second component that begins operation following a switch over from the first control plane to the second control plane,

wherein the portion of information relating to the PPP session is replicated from the first control plane to the second control plane,

wherein the first components of the second control plane direct operation of the data plane in accordance with the at least one portion of information prior to operation of the at least one second component,

wherein the data plane is configured to continue to handle transfer of data for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane,

wherein the data plane is configured to receive a PPP control packet for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane and terminate the PPP session in response to the PPP control packet.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one second component includes a routing module for routing network layer communications supported by the PPP session.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the portion of information includes a portion of data relating to each active PPP session controlled by the first control plane.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the second control plane is configured to recreate a portion of data not replicated from the first control plane.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the portion of data not replicated from the first control plane includes PPP stack information containing PPP control packets.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the data plane is configured to receive a PPP control packet for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane and terminating the PPP session in response to the PPP control packet.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 where the possible disconnection of the PPP session is detected if a PPP ECHO response is not received.

15. A system for conducting a point-to-point (PPP) session comprising:

means for establishing a PPP session involving at least a local node and a remote node, wherein the local node comprises a data plane for handling transfer of data for the PPP session at the local node, and wherein the local node comprises a first control plane for controlling operations of the data plane;

means for replicating a portion of PPP session information accessed by the first control plane to a second control plane of the local node, the second control plane comprising first means that operate concurrently with the first control plane and at least one second means that begins operation in response to a switch over from the first control plane to the second control plane; means for switching from the first control plane to the second control plane, wherein the first means of the second control plane direct operation of the data plane in accordance with the portion of information prior to operation of the at least one second means;

means for detecting a possible disconnection of the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane; and

means for terminating the PPP session in response to detecting the possible disconnection, and

wherein the data plane maintains a transfer of data for the PPP session during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

setting rate limit and access control values of the PPP session to default values in connection with switching to the second control plane; and

restoring the rate limit and access control values of the PPP session to values established by the first control plane responsive to operation of the at least one second component.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

establishing a new PPP stack at the second control plane in connection with switching from the first control plane to the second control plane; and

updating the new PPP stack at the second control plane with information about the PPP session during operation of the second control plane.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing packets associated with the PPP session at the data plane during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane; and

forwarding the packets to the second control plane when the switching is complete.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing changes to the PPP session at the data plane during switching from the first control plane to the second control plane; and

forwarding the changes from the data plane to the second control plane when the switching is complete.
