Abstract

Mobile communication systems and methods consistent with the present invention include a central station, a mobile unit and a plurality of radio base stations. The mobile unit communicates with the central station through one of the radio base stations. The central station receives from the mobile unit registration information identifying the radio base station the mobile unit is currently communicating with. This registration information is then stored in a registration database located at the central station. Files are then transferred from the central station to the mobile unit using the radio base station identified by the registration information stored in the registration database.

Claims (66)

1. A method comprising:

receiving from each of a plurality of mobile units registration information identifying a particular one of a plurality of radio base stations currently in communication with each mobile unit;

storing the registration information in a registration database, such that the registration database stores information identifying the particular radio base station currently communicating with the particular mobile unit;

receiving a request to transfer an application software file to a selected group of the plurality of mobile units, wherein the selected group is a subset of the plurality of mobile units;

transferring the application software file to each mobile unit in the selected group of mobile units using the radio base stations identified by the registration information.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the registration information includes at least one of an identification number of the mobile unit, the radio base station currently in communication with the mobile unit, and a radio base station previously in communication with the mobile unit.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting to a particular mobile unit of the plurality of mobile units an acknowledgment verifying that the registration information for the particular mobile unit was received.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein transferring the application software file further includes:

transmitting to a particular mobile unit of the selected group of mobile units a call request identifying the application software file;

receiving an acknowledgment from the particular mobile unit indicating that the particular mobile unit can receive the application software file; and

transferring the application software file to the particular mobile unit after the acknowledgment is received.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting a first set of the plurality of mobile units;

creating a batch file including registration information from the registration database for each of the first set of mobile units; and

transferring the application software file to the first set of mobile units using radio base stations identified by the registration information of the batch file.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein transferring the application software file further includes:

transmitting to the first set of mobile units a call request identifying the application software file;

receiving an acknowledgment from those mobile unit of the first set of mobile units that can receive the application software file, the acknowledgment indicating it can receive the application software file; and

transferring the application software file to each of the first set of mobile units for which a corresponding acknowledgment was received.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the application software file is an update to application software of a particular mobile unit of the selected group of mobile units, and wherein the method further comprises:

receiving from the particular mobile unit an inventory message providing information on a status of the application software; and

determining whether the inventory message indicates that the application software of the particular mobile unit was updated correctly.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

retransferring the application software file to the particular mobile unit when the application software of the particular mobile unit was not updated correctly.

9. A system comprising:

a plurality of radio base stations configured to transmit and receive signals to and from a plurality of mobile units;

a central station configured to communicate with each mobile unit through one of the radio base stations, the central station further including:

a registration database including registration information identifying the radio base station currently in communication with each mobile unit; and

a processor configured to transfer an application software file to a selected group of the plurality of mobile units, wherein the selected group is a subset of the plurality of mobile units, using the radio base stations identified by the registration information stored in the registration database for each mobile unit in the selected group.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the registration information includes at least one of an identification number of the mobile unit, the radio base station currently in communication with the mobile unit, and a radio base station previously in communication with the mobile unit.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

transmit to a particular mobile unit of the selected group of mobile units a call request identifying the application software file;

receive from the particular mobile unit an acknowledgment indicating that the particular mobile unit can receive the application software file; and

transferring the application software file to the particular mobile unit after the acknowledgment is received.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

select a first set of the plurality of mobile units;

create a batch file including registration information from the registration database for each of the first set of mobile units; and

transfer the application software file to the first set of mobile units using radio base stations identified by the registration information of the batch file.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

transmit to the first set of mobile units a call request identifying the application software file;

receive an acknowledgment from those mobile unit of the first set of mobile units that can receive the application software file, the acknowledgment indicating it can receive the application software file; and

transfer the application software file to each of the first set of mobile units for which a corresponding acknowledgment was received.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the application software file is an update to application software of a particular mobile unit of the selected group of mobile units, and wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive from the particular mobile unit an inventory message providing information on a status of the application software; and

determine whether the inventory message indicates that the application software of the particular mobile unit was updated correctly.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

retransfer the application software file to the particular mobile unit when the application software of the particular mobile unit was not updated correctly.

16. A system comprising:

means for receiving from each of a plurality of mobile units registration information identifying a particular one of a plurality of radio base stations currently in communication with each mobile unit;

means for storing the registration information in a registration database, such that the registration database stores information identifying the particular radio base station currently communicating with the particular mobile unit;

means for receiving a request to transfer an application software file to a selected group of the plurality of mobile units, wherein the selected group is a subset of the plurality of mobile units; and

means for transferring the application software file to each mobile unit in the selected group of mobile units using the radio base stations identified by the registration information.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising:

means for transmitting to a particular mobile unit of the plurality of mobile units an acknowledgment verifying that the registration information for the particular mobile unit was received.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the means for transferring the application software file further includes:

means for transmitting to a particular mobile unit of the selected group of mobile units a call request identifying the application software file;

means for receiving an acknowledgment from the particular mobile unit indicating that the particular mobile unit can receive the application software file; and

means for transferring the application software file to the particular mobile unit after the acknowledgment is received.

19. The system of claim 16 , further comprising:

means for selecting a first set of the plurality of mobile units;

means for creating a batch file including registration information from the registration database for each of the first set of mobile units; and

means for transferring the application software file to the first set of mobile units using radio base stations identified by the registration information of the batch file.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the application software file is an update to application software of a particular mobile unit of the selected group of mobile units, and wherein the system further comprises:

means for receiving from the particular mobile unit an inventory message providing information on a status of the application software; and

means for determining whether the inventory message indicates that the application software of the particular mobile unit was updated correctly.
