Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of inhibiting a toxin in an animal, such as a human, by administering to the animal a therapeutically effective amount of a polymer having a plurality of pendant acid functional groups which are directly attached to the polymer backbone or attached to the polymer backbone by a spacer group. The spacer group can have a length in the range from 0 to about 20 atoms. The toxin is, typically, an exotoxin secreted by a pathogenic microorganism, such as a bacterium.

Claims (8)

1. A method of inhibiting C. difficile bacterial toxin in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of polystyrene sulfonate, wherein the sulfonate groups of the polystyrene sulfonate are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

2. A method of treating C. difficile bacterial toxin-associated diarrhea in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of polystyrene sulfonate, wherein the sulfonate groups of the polystyrene sulfonate are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

A method of inhibiting onset of C. difficile bacterial toxin-associated diarrhea in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of polystyrene sulfonate, wherein the sulfonate groups of the polystyrene sulfonate are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

A method of inhibiting relapse of C. difficile bacterial toxin-associated diarrhea in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of polystyrene sulfonate, wherein the sulfonate groups of the polystyrene sulfonate are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

A method of inhibiting C. difficile bacterial toxin in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a homopolymer of polystyrene sulfonate or a copolymer comprising a polymerized styrene sulfonate repeat unit, and a hydrophobic repeat unit or a neutral hydrophilic repeat unit, wherein the sulfonate groups of the homopolymer or copolymer are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

A method of treating C. difficile bacterial toxin-associated diarrhea in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a homopolymer of a styrene sulfonate monomer or a copolymer comprising a styrene sulfonate repeat unit, and a hydrophobic repeat unit or a neutral hydrophilic repeat unit, wherein the sulfonate groups of the homopolymer or copolymer are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

A method of inhibiting onset of C. difficile bacterial toxin-associated diarrhea in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a homopolymer of a styrene sulfonate monomer or a copolymer comprising a styrene sulfonate repeat unit, and a hydrophobic repeat unit or a neutral hydrophilic repeat unit, wherein the sulfonate groups of the homopolymer or copolymer are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.

8. A method of inhibiting relapse of C. difficile bacterial toxin-associated diarrhea in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a homopolymer of a styrene sulfonate monomer or a copolymer comprising a styrene sulfonate repeat unit, and a hydrophobic repeat unit or a neutral hydrophilic repeat unit, wherein the sulfonate groups of the homopolymer or copolymer are in the protonated form, in the deprotonated form, or in a combination thereof.
