Abstract

An inkjet printer comprising a printhead assembly is provided. The printhead assembly comprises a printhead module configured for ejecting ink in a first direction and a capping device. The capping device is reciprocally movable between an open position in which the printhead module may eject ink onto a print medium, and a closed position in which a blocking part of the capping device blocks the printhead module from ejecting ink onto a print medium. The capping device comprises a first surface for engagement with a second surface of the assembly, the first and second surfaces being configured to move the blocking part of the capping device away from the printhead module in the first direction during movement from the open to the closed position.

Claims (19)

1. An inkjet printer comprising a printhead assembly, said printhead assembly comprising:

a printhead module configured for ejecting ink in a first direction; and

a capping device reciprocally movable between an open position in which the printhead module may eject ink onto a print medium, and a closed position in which a blocking part of the capping device blocks the printhead module from ejecting ink onto a print medium, wherein the capping device comprises a first surface for engagement with a second surface of the assembly, the first and second surfaces being configured to move the blocking part of the capping device to the printhead module in the first direction during movement from the open to the closed position.

2. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the second surface comprises first and second spaced apart planar portions that extend in a common plane and a third portion therebetween that extends out of the plane of the first and second portions, the first surface engaging the first and second portions when at the open and closed positions respectively and engaging the third portion when at an intermediate position between the open and closed positions.

3. The printer of claim 2 , wherein the third portion is curved.

4. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the blocking part comprises at least one pad that overlies a nozzle guard of the printhead module when in the closed position.

5. The printer of claim 4 , wherein the at least one pad contacts the nozzle guard when in the closed position.

6. The printer of claim 4 , wherein the at least one pad is formed of an elastomeric material.

7. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the capping device is mounted for movement between its open and closed positions generally transverse to the first direction.

8. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the blocking part lies generally in the same plane when in the open and closed positions.

9. The printer of claim 4 , wherein the capping device further comprises a first arm on which the at least one pad is mounted.

10. The printer of claim 9 , wherein the first arm is flexible.

11. The printer of claim 9 , wherein the first arm includes the first surface.

12. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the capping device is biased towards the open position.

13. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the capping device further comprises a resilient second arm that biases the capping device towards the open position.

14. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the printhead assembly further comprises a cam movable between open and closed positions for moving the capping device between its open and closed positions respectively.

15. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the printhead module has at least two passageways that open onto an upper surface and the capping device has at least one recess defined in an opposed surface that, when in the open position, aligns with the at least two passageways thereby allowing fluid flow from one passageway to the other via the at least one recess.

16. The printer of claim 15 wherein, when in the closed position the opposed surface closes the at least two passageways.

17. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the printhead assembly comprises a plurality of printhead modules and a respective capping device for each of the modules.
