Abstract

Methods for selecting Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS), or other medical electrical stimulator, electrode configurations from a set of electrode configurations are provided. Each electrode configuration represents a polarity or a polarity percentage of the electrodes of an electrode array. The selected electrode configurations may be used in a medical electrical stimulator. Such methods of selecting electrode configurations results in a more efficient programming and use of the stimulation system.

Claims (42)

1. A method for selecting an electrode configuration for use in a medical electrical stimulator, comprising:

providing a set of electrode configurations for an electrode array;

automatically testing a first portion of the set of electrode configurations in a first order;

allowing the selection of one or more of the tested electrode configurations;

determining whether a suitable number of electrode configurations from among the first portion have been selected within a predefined interval; and

automatically testing a second portion of the set of electrode configurations in a second order if the suitable number of electrode configurations from among the first portion are not selected within the predefined interval.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising varying a rate at which successive electrode configurations are tested.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein varying the rate comprises varying a change in current amplitude per second.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second orders is predetermined.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of electrode configurations is stored in one or more tables, each row of the one or more tables defines an electrode configuration, and the first and second portions of the set of electrode configurations are tested by stepping from one row in the one or more tables to another row in the one or more tables.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein each of the first and second portions of the set of electrode configurations is tested by stepping through adjacent rows of the same table.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the predefined interval is a predefined number of rows in the one or more tables.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second portion of the set of electrode configurations is automatically tested in the second order by skipping to another row in the table.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more tables comprises a plurality of tables, and wherein the second portion of the set of electrode configurations is automatically tested in the second order by switching from one of the plurality of tables to another of the plurality of tables.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein each electrode configuration in the set of electrode configurations defines a different percentage distribution of electrical current for the array of electrodes.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selection of the one or more tested electrode configurations comprises storing the one or more tested electrode configurations.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the different electrode configurations are defined by one or more different parameters selected from the group consisting of polarity, polarity percentage, amplitude, pulse width, and pulse rate.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the different electrode configurations are defined by different polarity percentages.

14. A method for selecting an electrode configuration for use in a medical electrical stimulator, comprising:

providing a set of electrode configurations for an electrode array;

automatically testing at least a portion of the set of electrode configurations;

allowing the selection of one or more of the tested electrode configurations;

adjusting one or more parameters during the testing, wherein the parameters are selected from the group consisting of polarity, polarity percentage, amplitude, pulse width, pulse rate, and combinations thereof, and wherein the adjusting is controllably shared in parallel between a clinician and a patient.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising varying a rate at which successive electrode configurations are tested.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein varying the rate comprises varying a change in current amplitude per second.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein a clinician determines a level of patient control of the adjusting.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein patient control of the adjustment of at least one of the one or more parameters overrides physician control of the adjustment of the at least one parameter.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the set of electrode configurations is stored in one or more tables, each row of the one or more tables defines an electrode configuration, and the portion of the set of electrode configurations are tested by stepping from one row in the one or more tables to another row in the one or more tables.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the portion of the set of electrode configurations is tested by stepping through adjacent rows of the same table.

21. The method of claim 14 , wherein each electrode configuration in the set of electrode configurations defines a different percentage distribution of electrical current for the array of electrodes.

22. A method for selecting an electrode configuration for use in a medical electrical stimulator, comprising:

providing a set of electrode configurations for an electrode array; and

testing an effective number of electrode configurations of the set of electrode configurations by:

sweeping through each section of an area of potential stimulation provided by the electrode array;

marking electrode configurations that are effective;

testing electrode configurations near any marked electrode configurations; and

selecting one or more of the tested electrode configurations.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising varying a rate at which successive electrode configurations are tested.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein varying the rate comprises varying a change in current amplitude per second.

25. The method of claim 22 , wherein the set of electrode configurations is stored in one or more tables, each row of the one or more tables defines an electrode configuration, and the electrode configurations near the marked electrode configuration are tested by stepping from one row in the one or more tables to another row in the one or more tables.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the effective number of electrode configurations of the set of electrode configurations is tested by stepping through adjacent rows of the same table.

27. The method of claim 22 , wherein each electrode configuration in the set of electrode configurations defines a different percentage distribution of electrical current for the array of electrodes.
