Abstract

The present invention provides a removable vena cava filter for capturing thrombi in a blood vessel. The filter comprises a plurality of primary struts having first ends attached together along a longitudinal axis. Each primary strut has an arcuate segment extending from the first end to an anchoring hook. The primary struts are configured to move between an expanded state for engaging the anchoring hooks with the blood vessel and a collapsed state for filter retrieval or delivery. Each primary strut are configured to cross another primary strut along the longitudinal axis in the collapsed state such that the arcuate segments occupy a first diameter greater than a second diameter occupied by the anchoring hooks in the collapsed state for filter retrieval or delivery.

a plurality of secondary struts separate from the primary struts, the secondary struts having a second length and connected ends attached together along the longitudinal axis and housed within the hub, wherein the secondary struts emanate from the first end of the hub and extend arcuately therefrom to free ends to centralize the filter in the expanded state in the blood vessel, each secondary strut extending arcuately along the longitudinal axis and linearly radially, each secondary strut having a first arc extending from the connected end away from the longitudinal axis and a second arc extending from the first arc towards the longitudinal axis, the second arc extending to the free end without a hook, the secondary struts having a smaller diameter than the primary struts, wherein the length of the filter is defined by the first length of the primary struts.

2. The removable filter of claim 1 further comprising:

a retrieval hook extending from the hub opposite the plurality of primary and secondary struts for removal of the filter from the blood vessel.

3. The removable filter of claim 1 wherein the first curved portion of each primary strut is configured to extend radially from the longitudinal axis of the filter and the second curved portion of each primary struts is configured to extend radially toward the longitudinal axis of the filter.

4. The removable filter of claim 1 wherein each primary strut is formed of a superelastic material, stainless steel wire, Nitinol, cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum-iron alloy, or cobalt-chrome alloy.

5. The removable filter of claim 1 wherein each secondary strut is formed of a superelastic material, stainless steel wire, Nitinol, cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum-iron alloy, or cobalt-chrome alloy.

6. The removable filter of claim 1 wherein the first diameter ranges between about 6 French and 14 French, and the second diameter ranges between about 3 French and 9 French.

7. The removable filter of claim 1 wherein the struts are formed of shape memory alloy with a transition temperature.

9. The removable filter of claim 7 wherein the struts expand to the expanded state when the temperature of the struts is about equal to or greater than the transition temperature.

10. The filter of claim 1 wherein pairs of secondary struts are positioned between pairs of primary struts, each pair of secondary struts being twisted about each other near the connected ends of the respective secondary struts to form a twisted section.

11. The filter of claim 10 wherein each twisted section includes between about one and ten twists.

12. A removable filter assembly for capturing thrombi in a blood vessel, the assembly comprising:

a removable filter comprising:

a plurality of primary struts each having a first length, the primary struts having first ends attached together along a longitudinal axis and housed within a hub, wherein the primary struts emanate from a first end of the hub, each primary strut having an arcuate segment including a first curved portion extending from the first end and a second curved portion extending from the first curved portion and terminating at an anchoring hook, the first and second curved portions defining a soft S-shape, each primary strut extending arcuately along the longitudinal axis and linearly radially, the primary struts being configured to move between an expanded state for engaging the anchoring hooks with the blood vessel and a collapsed state for filter retrieval or delivery, each primary strut being configured to cross another primary strut along the longitudinal axis in the collapsed state such that the arcuate segments occupy a first diameter, the first diameter being the distance between opposite arcuate segments of the primary struts in the collapsed state, and the anchoring hooks occupy a second diameter, the second diameter being the largest diameter occupied by the anchoring hooks in the collapsed state for filter retrieval or delivery, the first diameter being larger than the second diameter, each primary strut of the plurality of primary struts having a spring biased configuration that is self-expanding;

a plurality of secondary struts separate from the primary struts, the secondary struts having a second length and connected ends attached together along the longitudinal axis and housed within the hub, wherein the secondary struts emanate from the first end of the hub and extend therefrom to free ends to centralize the filter in the expanded state in the blood vessel, each secondary strut extending arcuately along the longitudinal axis and linearly radially, each secondary strut having a first arc extending from the connected end away from the longitudinal axis and a second arc extending from the first arc towards the longitudinal axis, the second arc extending to the free end without a hook, the secondary struts having a smaller diameter than the primary struts, wherein the length of the filter is defined by the first length of the primary struts;
