Abstract

A bone fixation device is provided that includes one or more plates and one or more screws having an arcuate outer surface. One or more fastener-receiving apertures with frustoconical inner surface extend through the plate. The bone fixation device may also include one or more locking arrangements that are configured to secure on or more screws in one or more fastener-receiving apertures.

Claims (65)

1. A bone fixation device, comprising:

one or more plates, each comprising:

a bone-contacting surface;

an upper surface opposite the bone-contacting surface; and

one or more fastener-receiving apertures extending through the plate from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface, wherein at least one fastener-receiving aperture comprises:

a major opening proximate the upper surface, wherein the major opening comprises a frustoconical inner surface;

a minor opening between the upper surface and the bone-contacting surface; and

a cylindrical channel extending from the minor opening to the bone-contacting surface;

one or more fixed screws having a head that has an upper surface, an arcuate lower surface and a threaded shaft extending from the arcuate lower surface, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the fixed screw head faces and is in contact with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture during fixation of a bone with the device and the arcuate lower surface of the fixed screw interfaces with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture at an interface, the interface providing a ring of contact between the arcuate lower surface of the screw and the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture, wherein the shaft includes an upper shaft having a diameter that matches a diameter of the cylindrical channel, wherein the upper shaft is positioned within the channel during fixation of a bone with the device, fixing the position of the screw relative to the plate; and

one or more variable screws including a head having an upper surface, an arcuate lower surface and a shaft extending from the arcuate lower surface, the head having a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the minor opening, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the screw head faces and is in contact with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture during fixation of a bone with the device, the shaft including an upper shaft having a diameter that is less than the diameter of the cylindrical channel such that a longitudinal axis of the variable screw may be positioned at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the channel during fixation of a bone with the device.

2. A bone fixation device, comprising:

one or more plates, each comprising:

a bone-contacting surface;

an upper surface opposite the bone-contacting surface; and

one or more fastener-receiving apertures extending through the plate from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface, wherein at least one fastener-receiving aperture comprises:

a first segment having a major opening;

a second segment having a frustoconical inner surface, wherein the first segment extends from the upper surface to the second segment; and

a third segment having a minor opening, the third segment extending from the second segment to the bone-contacting surface, wherein the third segment has a cylindrical inner surface;

one or more fixed screws including a head having an upper surface, an arcuate lower surface and a shaft extending from the arcuate lower surface, the head having a diameter greater than a diameter of the minor opening, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the screw head faces and is in contact with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture during fixation of a bone with the device, the shaft including an upper shaft having a diameter that matches the diameter of the minor opening such that the fixed screw is received within the third segment in a fixed orientation, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the screw interfaces with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture at an interface, the interface providing a ring of contact between the arcuate lower surface of the screw and the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture; and

one or more variable screws including a head having an upper surface, an arcuate lower surface and a shaft extending from the arcuate lower surface, the head having a diameter greater than a diameter of the minor opening, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the screw head faces and is in contact with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture during fixation of a bone with the device, the shaft including an upper shaft having a diameter that is less than the diameter of the minor opening such that a longitudinal axis of the variable screw may be positioned at a variety of angles relative to a longitudinal axis of the channel for fixation of a bone with the device.

3. A bone fixation device, comprising:

one or more plates, each comprising:

a bone contacting surface;

an upper surface opposite the bone-contacting surface; and

two or more fastener-receiving apertures extending through the plate from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface, wherein at least a first fastener-receiving aperture comprises:

a major opening proximate the upper surface, wherein the major opening comprises a frustoconical inner surface; and

a minor opening proximate the bone-contacting surface, wherein the minor opening comprises a cylindrical inner surface; and

at least a second fastener-receiving aperture comprises a frustoconical inner surface extending from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface of the plate; and

two or more screws including a head having an upper surface, an arcuate lower surface and a shaft extending from the arcuate lower surface, the head having a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the minor opening, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the screw head faces and is in contact with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture during fixation of a bone with the device, wherein the arcuate lower surface of the screw interfaces with the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture at an interface, the interface providing a ring of contact between the arcuate lower surface of the screw and the frustoconical inner surface of the fastener-receiving aperture;

wherein at least one of the two or more screws is a variable screw having an upper shaft with a diameter that is less than the diameter of the minor opening such that a longitudinal axis of the variable screw may be positioned at a variety of angles relative to a longitudinal axis of the fastener-receiving aperture; and

wherein at least one of the two or more screws is a fixed screw having an upper shaft with a diameter that matches the diameter of the minor opening such that the screw is positioned within the fastener-receiving aperture at a fixed angle.

4. A bone fixation device comprising:

one or more plates, each comprising:

a bone-contacting surface;

an upper surface opposite the bone-contacting surface;

a plurality of fastener-receiving apertures extending through the plate from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface; and

at least one locking aperture within the upper surface of the plate, the locking aperture having an inner surface, wherein at least one locking aperture is surrounded by three fastener-receiving apertures;

a plurality of screws, each screw disposed in one of the plurality of fastener-receiving apertures, wherein at least one screw is a fixed screw structured to be received in the fastener-receiving aperture in a fixed position relative to the plate, and at least one screw is a variable screw structured to be received in the fastener-receiving aperture at a variety of angles relative to the plate; and

a locking element, comprising:

a locking cover configured to secure three screws simultaneously in the plurality of fastener-receiving apertures; and

a shaft extending from the locking cover and rotatably mounted within the locking aperture.

5. The bone fixation device according to claim 4 , wherein the locking element has a locked and an unlocked position.

6. The bone fixation device according to claim 4 , wherein the locking aperture extends between the bone-contacting surface and the upper surface of the plate.

The bone fixation device according to claim 4 , further comprising a deformable member disposed between the shaft of the locking element and the inner surface of the locking aperture, the deformable member being mounted to the inner surface of the locking aperture and extending inward toward and in contact with the shaft of the locking element, wherein the deformable member comprises a deformable cylinder.

8. The bone fixation device according to claim 7 , wherein the deformable member is constructed from a biocompatible plastic material.

9. The bone fixation device according to claim 7 , wherein the deformable member is constructed from ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).

10. A bone fixation device, comprising:

one or more plates, each comprising:

a bone-contacting surface; and

an upper surface opposite the bone-contacting surface;

two or more fastener-receiving apertures extending through the plate from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface, wherein at least a first fastener-receiving aperture comprises a major opening proximate the upper surface, the major opening comprising a frustoconical inner surface, a minor opening proximate the bone-contacting surface, and a cylindrical channel extending from the minor opening to the bone-contacting surface, wherein at least a second fastener-receiving aperture comprises a frustoconical inner surface extending from the upper surface to the bone-contacting surface of the plate;

a plurality of screws, each screw configured to be disposed in one of the two or more fastener-receiving apertures, wherein at least one screw is a fixed screw structured to be received in one of the fastener-receiving apertures in a fixed position relative to the plate, and at least one screw is a variable screw structure to be received in one of the fastener-receiving apertures at a variety of angles relative to the plate; and

at least one locking arrangement rotatably mounted to the one or more plates having a predetermined locked position, comprising:

at least one locking aperture within the upper surface of the plate, the locking aperture having a threaded inner surface; and

at least one locking element, comprising:

a locking cover configured to contact the upper surface of the plate; and

a threaded shaft extending from the locking cover and rotatably mounted within the locking aperture, wherein a threaded portion of the shaft mates with the threaded inner surface of the locking aperture such that the locking element has a predetermined initial and final position.

11. The bone fixation device according to claim 10 , wherein the locking arrangement has a locked and an unlocked position.

12. The bone fixation device according to claim 10 , wherein the locking aperture extends between the bone-contacting surface and the upper surface of the plate.

The bone fixation device according to claim 10 , further comprising a deformable member disposed between the shaft of the locking element and the inner surface of the locking aperture, wherein the deformable member is deformed between the shaft of the locking element and the inner surface of the locking aperture, wherein the deformable member comprises a deformable cylinder.

14. The bone fixation device according to claim 13 , wherein the deformable member is mounted to the inner surface of the locking aperture.

15. The bone fixation device according to claim 13 , wherein the deformable member is mounted to the shaft of the locking element.

16. The bone fixation device according to claim 13 , wherein the deformable member is constructed from a biocompatible plastic material.

17. The bone fixation device according to claim 13 , wherein the deformable member is constructed from ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).

18. The bone fixation device of claim 3 , wherein the first fastener-receiving aperture receives a fixed screw in a fixed position, and the second fastener-receiving aperture receives a variable screw in a variable position.
