Abstract

A retainer member formed of bone secures tissue relative to a bone. The retainer member forms an opening in a compact outer layer of the bone. The retainer member is enclosed in a tubular member or sleeve to prevent breaking of the retainer member during formation of the opening in the bone. The extent of movement of the retainer member into the bone in the patient's body is determined as the retainer member is moved into the bone. A suture may be connected with the retainer member and used to connect tissue with the bone. The retainer member may be positioned across a fracture in a bone to hold portions of the bone relative to each other. The retainer member may be used at a joint between end portions of bones to immobilize the joint and be released by breaking the retainer member.

Claims (31)

1. A method of securing tissue in a patient's body, comprising:

positioning a retainer member through first and second tissue and into a third tissue;

preventing relative movement between the first, second, and third tissues with the retainer member for a period of time; and

thereafter, breaking the retainer member between the second and third tissue to release the third tissue for movement relative to the first and second tissue.

2. A method as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising connecting the retainer member with the first tissue by moving a portion of the retainer member into the first tissue and transmitting force between an outer side surface area on the retainer member and the first tissue.

3. A method as set forth in claim 2 , further comprising connecting the retainer member with the second tissue by moving a portion of the retainer member into the second tissue and transmitting force between an outer side surface area on the retainer member and the second tissue.

4. A method as set forth in claim 3 , further comprising connecting the retainer member with the third tissue by moving a portion of the retainer member into the third tissue and transmitting force between an outer side surface area on the retainer member and the third tissue.

5. A method as set forth in claim 1 , further including tensioning at least one of the first, second, or third tissues prior to positioning the retainer member through the first and second tissue and into the third tissue.

6. A method as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising utilizing the retainer member to form an opening in at least one of the first, second, or third tissues in the patient's body.

7. A method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the retainer prevents relative movement between the first and second tissues after breaking the retainer member between the second and third tissue to release the third tissue for movement relative to the first and second tissue.

8. A method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein positioning a retainer member through first and second tissue and into a third tissue includes:

moving a leading end portion of the retainer member through the first tissue into the second tissue, and thereafter into the third tissue; and

interrupting movement of the retainer member when the leading end portion of the retainer member has moved a predetermined distance into the third tissue disposed in the patient's body.

9. A method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein positioning a retainer member through first and second tissue and into a third tissue includes:

enclosing the retainer member within a sleeve;

applying force against a trailing end portion of the retainer member; and

moving a leading end portion of the retainer member into the first, second, and third tissue under the influence of force applied against the trailing end portion of the retainer member while the retainer member is enclosed by the sleeve.

10. A method as set forth in claim 9 , further including interrupting movement of the leading end portion of the retainer member when the leading end portion of the retainer member has moved a predetermined distance into the third tissue.

11. A method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the first and third tissues are first and second bones.

12. A method as set forth in claim 11 , wherein breaking the retainer member between the second and third tissue to release the third tissue for movement relative to the first and second tissue includes bending a joint between the first and second bones such that the retainer member breaks between the second tissue and the second bone.

A method as set forth in claim 11 , wherein positioning a retainer member through first and second tissue and into a third tissue, includes utilizing the retainer member to form an opening extending through the first bone and the second tissue and to form an opening extending into the second bone.

14. A method as set forth in claim 11 , wherein the second tissue is a connective tissue disposed between the first and second bones.

A method as set forth in claim 14 , wherein an end portion of the first bone is disposed adjacent to an end portion of the second bone, and positioning a retainer member through first and second tissue and into a third tissue includes moving a portion of the retainer member through the end portion of the first bone, through the connective tissue and into the end portion of the second bone.

16. A method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the retainer member is made of bone.

17. A method of securing a first bone in a patient's body against movement relative to a second bone in the patient's body, comprising:

moving a retainer member into the first bone, through a connective tissue disposed between the first and second bones, and into the second bone;

retaining the first and second bones and connective tissue against movement relative to each other with the retainer member; and

thereafter, breaking the retainer member to release the second bone for movement relative to first bone and connective tissue, wherein the retainer member is broken between the connective tissue and second bone.

18. A method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein the retainer prevents relative movement between the first bone and the connective tissue after breaking the retainer member to release the second bone for movement relative to the first bone and the connective tissue.

19. A method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein breaking the retainer member to release the second bone for movement relative to first bone and connective tissue includes breaking the retainer member in a joint space located between the first and second bones.

20. A method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein breaking the retainer member in a joint space located between the first and second bones includes bending a joint between the first and second bones.
