Abstract

An optical test apparatus comprises: a) a motor rotating a spindle which in turn rotates a workpiece such as a magnetic disk substrate; b) an upper test head comprising a laser for providing an upper laser beam to the upper surface of the workpiece, an upper lens for receiving light reflected from the upper surface, and an upper detector for generating a signal indicative of the received light; and c) a lower test head comprising a lower laser providing a laser beam to the lower surface of the workpiece, a lower lens for receiving light reflected from the lower surface and a lower detector for generating a signal indicative of the received light. The path of the lower laser beam is displaced from a radial direction of the workpiece so that the lower lens can be placed closer to the laser spot than if it was not displaced.

Claims (45)

1. Method comprising:

causing a light beam to trace a path along a surface of a rotating disk-shaped workpiece;

detecting light reflected off of said workpiece with a first detector,

wherein the path traced by said light beam is displaced from a radial direction of said workpiece; and

collecting light reflected off of said workpiece with a lens, wherein said displacement facilitates placing said lens closer to a point on said workpiece where said light strikes said workpiece than if there were no displacement.

2. Method of claim 1 further comprising inspecting said surface in response to light passing through said lens and striking said first detector.

3. Method of claim 1 further comprising detecting light reflected off of said surface with a second detector and inspecting said surface in response to output signals provided by said first and second detectors.

4. Method of claim 1 wherein said light beam is a laser beam, said workpiece is a platter, and said path is linear.

5. Method of claim 1 wherein said workpiece is rotated with a spindle, and without said displacement in said path said spindle would interfere with positioning of said lens.

6. Method comprising:

causing a light beam to trace a path along a surface of a rotating disk-shaped workpiece;

detecting light reflected off of said workpiece with a first detector,

wherein the plane of incidence of the beam forms a non-zero angle with respect to the tangent of an innermost track of the workpiece scanned during said method.

7. Method of claim 6 further comprising collecting light reflected off of said workpiece with a lens, wherein said non-zero angle facilitates placing said lens closer to the point on said workpiece where said light strikes said workpiece than if said plane of incidence was tangent with said innermost track.

8. Method of claim 7 further comprising inspecting said surface in response to light passing through said lens and striking said first detector.

9. Method of claim 7 further comprising detecting light reflected off of said surface with a second detector and inspecting said surface in response to output signals provided by said first and second detectors.

10. Method of claim 7 wherein said light beam is a laser beam, said workpiece is a platter, and said path is linear.

11. Method of claim 7 wherein said workpiece is rotated with a spindle, and without said displacement in said path said spindle would interfere with positioning of said lens.

12. Apparatus comprising:

a light source for providing a light beam to a disk-shaped workpiece, said light beam scanning a path on said workpiece, the plane of incidence of the beam forming a non-zero angle with respect to the tangent of an innermost track of the workpiece scanned by said apparatus; and

a lens for receiving light reflected by said workpiece.

13. Apparatus of claim 12 wherein said angle facilitates placing said lens closer to the point on said workpiece where said light strikes said workpiece than if said plane of incidence were tangent to said innermost track.

14. Apparatus of claim 13 further comprising:

a first detector for detecting light passing through said lens; and

a circuit for inspecting said workpiece in response to said light detected by said first detector.

15. Apparatus of claim 14 further comprising a second detector for receiving light reflected off of said surface, said circuit inspecting said surface in response to output signals provided by said first and second detectors.

16. Apparatus of claim 12 wherein said workpiece is a platter that is rotated with a spindle, and witbout non-zero angle said spindle would interfere with positioning of said lens.

17. Apparatus comprising:

a light source for providing a light beam to a disk-shaped workpiece, said light beam scanning a path on said workpiece;

a lens for receiving light reflected by said workpiece;

wherein said path is displaced from a radial direction of said workpiece, and

wherein said displacement of said path from said radial direction facilitates placing said lens closer to a point on said workpiece where said light strikes said workpiece than if there were no displacement.

18. Apparatus of claim 17 further comprising:

a first detector for detecting light passing through said lens; and

a circuit inspecting said workpiece in response to said light detected by said first detector.

19. Apparatus of claim 18 further comprising a second detector for receiving light reflected off of said surface, said circuit inspecting said surface in response to output signals provided by said first and second detectors.

20. Apparatus comprising:

a light source for providing a light beam to a disk-shaped workpiece, said light beam scanning a path on said workpiece;

a lens for receiving light reflected by said workpiece;

wherein said path is displaced from a radial direction of said workpiece, and

wherein said workpiece is rotated with a spindle, and wherein without said displacement in said path said spindle would interfere with positioning of said lens.

21. Method comprising:

causing a light beam from a light source to scan a path on a disk-shaped workpiece, said path being displaced from a radial direction of said workpiece;

receiving light reflected by said workpieee with a lens, and

rotating said workpiece with a spindle, wherein without displacement in said path said spindle would interfere with the positioning of said lens.
