Abstract

A kit for assisting in the set-up of a fluid pumping or mixing system including a superconducting element capable of reaching a transition temperature during a field cooling process is disclosed. In one embodiment, the kit comprises at least one pumping or mixing element including a levitation magnet and at least one charging magnet substantially corresponding in size, shape, and magnetic field distribution to the levitation magnet. The presence of the charging magnet adjacent the superconducting element during the field cooling process enables stable levitation of the pumping or mixing element, including when in a fluid-filled vessel positioned adjacent the superconducting element.

Claims (28)

1. An assembly for intended use in association with a system for pumping or mixing a fluid using a magnet forming part of a magnetic bearing and associated with a motive device without the need for any shaft or seal connected to the magnet, comprising:

a flexible bag including the magnet supporting at least one blade or vane; and

an attachment supported by the bag, the attachment comprising a coupler for forming a coupling with the magnet through the bag.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the coupler comprises a ferromagnetic material.

3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the coupling is a magnetic coupling.

4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the attachment further comprises a non-magnetic material.

5. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the non-magnetic material is elastic.

6. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the non-magnetic material is sandwiched between the coupler and the bag.

7. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein the non-magnetic material surrounds the coupler.

8. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the bag is sealed with the magnet inside.

9. In an assembly for mixing a fluid using a magnet positioned in a flexible bag and having a magnetic field for forming part of a magnetic bearing with a motive device external to the bag, the improvement comprising an attachment carried by the bag, the attachment including a coupler for coupling with the magnet and thereby shielding the magnetic field, wherein the magnet supports at least one blade or vane.

10. The assembly of claim 9 , wherein the coupler comprises a ferromagnetic material.

11. The assembly of claim 9 , wherein the coupling is a magnetic coupling.

12. The assembly of claim 9 , wherein the attachment further comprises a non-magnetic material.

13. The assembly of claim 9 , wherein the bag is sealed with the magnet inside.

14. A method of pumping or mixing a fluid using a magnet positioned in a bag and forming a magnetic bearing with an external motive device, comprising:

at least partially filling the bag with the fluid;

breaking a coupling between a coupler carried by the bag and the magnet; and

after the breaking step, using the magnet to agitate the fluid.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the using step comprises rotating the magnet using the motive device.

16. An assembly for use in association with a system for pumping or mixing a fluid, comprising:

a flexible plastic bag including an external surface and an interior compartment capable of holding the fluid;

a magnetic impeller for agitating the fluid positioned within the interior compartment of the bag; and

an attachment carried by the bag adjacent to the external surface, the attachment comprising a coupler for forming a coupling with the magnetic impeller.

17. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein the magnetic impeller includes a first magnet, and the coupler includes a second magnet for coupling with the first magnet.

18. The assembly of claim 17 , wherein the bag and at least two layers of non-magnetic material are sandwiched between the magnets.

19. The assembly of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the layers of non-magnetic material touches one of the magnets.

20. The assembly of claim 16 , wherein the impeller further includes at least one blade or vane.
