Abstract

Effective sustained release of microbial pesticides in aquatic environments can be achieved by the combination of buoyant particles with a particulate microbial active ingredient. The resulting materials in the form of a particulate have combined density of less than one. The materials are then dispersed into gypsum slurry that is poured into briquette molds, or made into granules or pellets of various sizes, to form a solid, sinking, pest control composition. Once applied in aquatic field sites, the surface of the matrix slowly dissolves, releasing many minute buoyant pesticide laden particles to the water surface over the life of the product. Once at the surface, the particulate microbial pesticide(s) release from the buoyant particles and are distributed throughout the water column to be ingested by susceptible immature filter feeding mosquitoes and pestiferous flies.

Claims (13)

1. A controlled slow release microbial pest control composition in the form of a briquette that can be applied to an aqueous pest breeding site, the composition comprising a slow release matrix comprising a plaster slow release agent, hardened by the addition of a sufficient hydrating amount of water, and an effective amount of gypsum accelerator, the plaster having a compressive strength of 1,000 to 18,000 lbs. per square inch, the composition having dispersed in the matrix a particulate comprising an effective pest population controlling amount of a microbial pest control agent and a powdered polymeric buoyant agent a specific gravity of 0.99 to 0.85, the powdered polymeric buoyant agent having void space; wherein the powdered polymeric buoyant agent comprises the microbial pest control agent present within the void spaces of the polymeric buoyant agent; wherein said composition can be used in the form of a sinking pest control briquette that when immersed in water of an aqueous pest breeding site, the slow release briquette sinks in the aqueous pest breeding site, and as the plaster dissolves, the particulate is released to the surface of the aqueous pest breeding site; wherein the mechanism of slow release is the dissolution of the plaster; and wherein the particulate releases at the water surface an effective pest control in the amount of a microbial pest control agent for greater than 154 days, and that when dry the composition does not release the agent.

2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the pest control agent comprises a microbial agent comprising a bacterium, fungus, virus, or a combination thereof.

3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the pest control agent comprises a solid unit within which is contained the matrix comprising particulate microbial pest control agent.

4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the particulate pest control agent comprises an insecticide which is present in the total composition at an amount of about 0.1 to about 20 wt-%.

5. The composition of claim 4 wherein the microbial insecticide comprises a mosquito control agent.

6. The composition of claim 5 wherein the mosquito control agent comprises Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis alone, Bacillus sphericus alone, both Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and Bacillus sphericus microbial control agents in combination, or genetically modified forms and or combinations thereof.

7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the compressive strength of the high compressive strength plaster ranges from about 1,000 to about 15,000 pounds per square inch.

8. The composition of claim 7 wherein the compressive strength of the high compressive strength plaster ranges from about 4,000 to 14,000 pounds per square inch.

9. The composition of claim 1 wherein the pest control agent is present in the total composition in an amount of about 2 to about 15 wt-percent.

10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the plaster is present in the total composition in an amount of about 20 to 90 wt-% and the buoyant agent is present in an amount of about 0.1 to 20 wt %.

11. The composition of claim 1 wherein the plaster is present in the total composition in an amount of about 30 to 90 wt-%.

12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the buoyant agent comprises a powdered polypropylene and is present in the total composition in an amount of about 1 to about 20 wt %.

13. A method of controlling pest populations that comprises distributing the solid pest control means of claim 1 into an aqueous environment.
