Abstract

The invention relates generally to ion mobility based systems, methods and devices for analyzing samples and, more particularly, to sample detection using enhanced condition control and data interpretation.

Claims (39)

1. A method for identifying one or more ion species of a sample comprising,

filtering the ion species of the sample over a range of applied asymmetric fields and compensation fields,

measuring the ion intensities of the filtered ion species over the range of applied asymmetric fields and compensation fields,

generating an image showing the ion intensities over the range of the asymmetric fields and compensation fields, and

processing windowed portions of the image to identify one or more ion species of the sample.

2. The method of claim 1 comprising, processing the windowed portions of the image to determine concentration of the one or more ion species of the sample.

3. The method of claim 1 comprising, including in the image the ion intensities that exceed a threshold ion intensity level.

4. The method of claim 1 comprising, averaging a portion of the measured ion intensities over a select period of time to improve identification of the one or more ion species.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing includes determining whether the windowed portions of the image substantially match signature data of at least one known agent.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the range of applied asymmetric fields and range of compensation fields are limited to values substantially within the windowed portions of the image.

7. The method of claim 6 comprising, selecting ranges of the applied asymmetric fields and the compensation fields based at least in part on environmental conditions.

8. The method of claim 6 comprising, selecting ranges of the asymmetric fields and the compensation fields based at least in part on a library of asymmetric field and compensation field ranges associated with the one or more species to be detected.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image is a three-dimensional dispersion plot.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the three-dimensional dispersion plot includes color to show at least one of the dimensions of the plot.

11. The method of claim 1 comprising, selecting the windowed portions of the image for processing based at least in part on environmental conditions.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the environmental conditions include at least one of pressure, temperature, humidity, carrier gas composition, carrier gas mixture, dopant concentration, fragmentation, and gas flow rate.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the filtering is performed by at least two ion mobility based analyzers.

14. The method of claim 1 comprising, using a MS to measure at least one of the mass and molecular weight of the filtered ions species for identification of the ion species.

15. The method of claim 1 comprising, using an IMS for further ion species identification.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the filtering is performed by a DMS filter and measuring is performed by a DMS detector, the DMS filter and DMS detector residing within the same flow channel, the flow channel proximate to the DMS detector being expanded in volume relative to the flow channel proximate to the DMS filter.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the image is a three-dimensional dispersion plot.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the three-dimensional dispersion plot includes color to show at least one of the dimensions of the plot.

19. A system for identifying one or more ion species of a sample comprising,

a first filter for filtering the ion species of the sample over a range of applied asymmetric fields and compensation fields,

a detector for measuring the ion intensities of the filtered ion species over the range of applied asymmetric fields and compensation fields,

a processor for generating an image showing the ion intensities over the range of the asymmetric fields and compensation fields and processing windowed portions of the image to identify one or more ion species of the sample.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the processor is configured for processing the windowed portions of the image to determine concentration of the one or more ion species of the sample.

21. The system of claim 19 , wherein the processor is configured for including in the image the ion intensities that exceed a threshold ion intensity level.

22. The system of claim 19 , wherein the processor is configured for averaging a portion of the measured ion intensities over a select period of time to improve identification of the one or more ion species.
