Abstract

Systems and methods for determining the integrity of an endoscope. The systems and methods provide for an air enclosure which includes the internal area of the sleeve or tubing of the endoscope to be pressurized. Pressure measurements of the air enclosure are then taken both before and after the endoscope is manipulated by a user. The systems and methods may also or alternatively vent air from inside the endoscope to a humidity detector to detect the presence of fluid inside the endoscope.

Claims (36)

1 . A method for testing the integrity of an endoscope comprising the steps of:

obtaining an endoscope;

supplying a gas to an air enclosure which includes an internal volume of said endoscope;

venting said gas in said air enclosure to a humidity detector;

determining the level of humidity in said vented gas; and

using the outcome of said step of determining to determine if said level of humidity in said endoscope is sufficiently high to indicate fluid invasion into said endoscope.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein said step of using comprises comparing said level of humidity to a predetermined trigger amount.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of measuring environmental humidity, wherein said environmental humidity is directly related to said trigger amount.

4 . The method of claim 3 wherein said step of measuring occurs prior to said step of supplying.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein in said step of supplying, said gas is supplied to said air enclosure which is pressurized and said air enclosure is then sealed, and in said step of venting said seal is opened allowing said supplied gas to be vented.

6 . The method of claim 1 wherein in said step of venting, gas is forced from said air enclosure by an air withdrawing system.

7 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of placing said endoscope in a holding device prior to said step of measuring.

8 . The method of claim 7 wherein said holding device comprises a holding bin having a mat on its base, said mat including a plurality of fingers.

9 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

measuring the pressure of said gas in said enclosure, prior to said step of venting.

10 . An integrity tester for an endoscope, the tester comprising:

an air supply for supplying air to an air enclosure which includes an internal volume of said endoscope to pressurize said air enclosure;

means for venting said air from said air enclosure;

a humidity tester for determining the level of humidity in said vented air; and

means for determining if said level of humidity in said endoscope is sufficiently high to indicate fluid invasion into said endoscope.

11 . The tester of claim 10 wherein said means for venting comprises a seal which can seal said air in said air enclosure under pressure and then open to allow said pressure to vent said air

12 . The tester of claim 10 wherein said means for venting comprises an air withdrawing system.

13 . The tester of claim 12 wherein said air withdrawing system comprises an air compressor operating to draw air from said air enclosure.

14 . The tester of claim 10 further comprising a holding device for said endoscope.

15 . The tester of claim 14 wherein said holding device comprises a holding bin having a mat on its base, said mat including a plurality of fingers.

16 . An integrity tester for an endoscope, the tester comprising:

an air compressor for supplying air to an air enclosure which includes an internal volume of said endoscope;

a humidity tester for determining the level of humidity in air; and

a control system;

wherein said humidity tester obtains an air sample from said air enclosure and determines the humidity of said air sample;

wherein said control system compares said humidity of said air sample to a trigger amount of humidity; and

wherein said control system reports whether said humidity in said air sample is above said trigger amount.

17 . The tester of claim 16 wherein said trigger amount is directly related to environmental humidity outside of said tester.

18 . The tester of claim 16 wherein said air compressor withdraws air from said air enclosure to supply said air sample to said humidity tester.

19 . The tester of claim 16 further comprising a holding device for said endoscope.

20 . The tester of claim 19 wherein said holding device comprises a holding bin having a mat on its base, said mat including a plurality of fingers.
