Abstract

A replaceable cartridge for installation in a mobile device, the cartridge comprising: a printhead; one or more ink reservoirs for supplying ink to the printhead; and an integrated circuit for enabling validation of the cartridge upon installation of the cartridge into the mobile device, the integrated circuit including non-volatile memory for storing secret information.

Claims (21)

1. A replaceable cartridge for installation in a mobile device, the cartridge comprising:

a printhead;

a capping mechanism including a capper moveable between;

a capping position in which the capper is urged into engagement with the printhead; and

an uncapped position in which the capper is displaced away from the printhead;

one or more ink reservoirs for supplying ink to the printhead; and

an integrated circuit with non-volatile memory storing information regarding at least characteristic of the cartridge such that upon installation of the cartridge into the mobile device, interrogation of the integrated circuit provides the information to the mobile device.

2. A cartridge according to claim 1 , further including electrical contacts for communication between the mobile device and the integrated circuit during interrogation.

3. A cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is configured to communicate with a second integrated circuit in the mobile device in a secure fashion.

4. A cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is configured to store data indicative of a number of prints remaining, the integrated circuit including one or more security features for preventing unauthorised tampering with the data.

5. A cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the information includes ink level data, the integrated circuit being configured to change the ink level data as ink is used in printing.

6. A cartridge according to claim 5 , wherein the integrated circuit is designed to prevent the ink level data being changed to indicate an increase in ink levels.

7. A cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the information includes data indicating a number of prints remaining the integrated circuit being configured to change the data indicating the number of prints remaining each time a print is made.

8. A cartridge according to claim 7 , wherein the integrated circuit is designed to prevent changes to the data to indicate an increase in the number of prints remaining.

9. A cartridge according to claim 1 ,

wherein during operation, the capper is pushed to the uncapped position by an edge of a print medium to be printed by the printhead.

10. A cartridge according to claim 9 , wherein in the capped position, the capper is biased into engagement with the printhead.

11. A cartridge according to claim 10 , wherein during use, the print medium moves past the printhead as it is printed in a feed direction, and the capper moves in the feed direction as it moves from the capping position to the uncapped position.

12. A cartridge according to claim 11 , wherein the capping mechanism is further configured such that the capper is simultaneously displaced in a direction away from the printhead as it is displaced in the feed direction.

13. A cartridge according to claim 12 , wherein the capping mechanism is subsequently displaced in a direction opposite the feed direction in the uncapped position.

14. A cartridge according to claim 13 , further including a locking mechanism for holding the capper in the uncapped position while the print medium is being printed on by the printhead.
