Abstract

An artificial vision system including a sealed capsule adapted for intraocular placement upstream of a retina, an electronic display located within the sealed capsule and focusing optics located within the sealed capsule and arranged for focusing an image on the electronic display onto the retina.

Claims (37)

1. An intraocular implant, for placement upstream of a retina, comprising:

a telescope body defining an optical path for light to pass therethrough;

at least one first lens and at least one second lens enclosed in said telescope body;

a variable positioner, enclosed in said telescope body, operative to variably position at least one of said lenses along its optical axis relative to another at least one of said lenses, and to thereby focus objects located at multiple distances onto the retina;

a focus control assembly enclosed in said telescope body and operative to provide control signals to said variable positioner, said focus control assembly comprising electronic circuitry which is arranged to lie in a cylindrical configuration outside said optical path; and

a mounting structure connected to said telescope body for mounting said implant in an eye.

2. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said focus control assembly comprises a range finder.

3. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said focus control assembly comprises a focus resolver.

4. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said focus control assembly is responsive to a user input.

5. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said variable positioner comprises:

a mounting for at least one of said lenses;

at least one magnet; and

at least one electromagnetic coil, interacting with said at least one magnet.

6. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said focus control assembly is responsive to an input from an input device external to said telescope body.

7. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein electronic circuitry comprises a wireless receiver for receiving ranging information.

8. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said electronic circuitry comprises at least one of a wireless energy receiver and an energy storage facility.

9. An intraocular implant according to claim 8 and wherein said wireless energy receiver comprises a resonant circuit.

10. An intraocular implant according to claim 8 and wherein said energy storage facility comprises at least one of a rechargeable miniature battery and a capacitor.

11. An intraocular implant according to claim 1 and wherein said variable positioner comprises at least one permanent magnet and at least one electromagnetic coil interacting therewith.

12. A method for adjusting the focal length of a lens arrangement in an intraocular implant upstream of a retina, comprising:

providing an intraocular implant comprising:

a telescope body defining an optical path for light to pass therethrough;

at least one first lens and at least one second lens enclosed in said telescope body;

a variable positioner, enclosed in said telescope body,

operative to variably position at least one of said lenses along its optical axis relative to another at least one of said lenses, and to thereby focus objects located at multiple distances onto the retina;

a focus control assembly enclosed in said telescope body and operative to provide control signals to said variable positioner, said focus control assembly comprising electronic circuitry which is arranged to lie in a cylindrical configuration outside said optical path; and

a mounting structure connected to said telescope body for mounting said implant in an eye,

implanting said intraocular implant upstream of a retina in an eye; and

adjusting the position of said at least one of said lenses relative to said another at least one of said lenses, comprising:

providing a control signal from said focus control assembly to said variable positioner; and

employing said variable positioner to variably position said at least one of said lenses along its optical axis relative to said another at least one of said lenses, and to thereby focus objects located at multiple distances onto said retina.

13. A method according to claim 12 and wherein said providing a control signal from said focus control assembly comprises:

at said focus control assembly, receiving a user input; and

responsive to said user input, providing said control signal from said focus control assembly to said variable positioner.

14. A method according to claim 12 and wherein said providing a control signal from said focus control assembly comprises:

at said focus control assembly, receiving an input from an input device which is external to said telescope body; and

responsive to said input, providing said control signal from said focus control assembly to said variable positioner.
