Abstract

A physical layer device communicates over a cable and includes a cable tester that determines a cable status. The cable tester includes a pretest module that senses activity on the cable. A test module transmits a test pulse on the cable, measures reflection amplitude, calculates a cable length, and determines the cable status based on the measured amplitude and the calculated cable length. A first digital signal processor (DSP) communicates with a first pair of the cable and includes a first echo canceller and a first finite impulse response filter with first taps. A second DSP communicates with a second pair of the cable and includes a second echo canceller and a second finite impulse response filter with second taps. At least one of the physical layer device and the cable tester estimates skew between the first and second pairs based on values of the first and second taps.

Claims (29)

1. A physical layer device that communicates over a cable, comprising:

a cable tester that determines a cable status, which includes an open status, a short status and a normal status, wherein said cable tester includes:

a pretest module that senses activity on said cable and selectively enables testing based on said sensed activity;

a test module that is enabled by said pretest module, that transmits a test pulse on the cable, that measures a reflection amplitude, that calculates a cable length, and that determines said cable status based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length;

a first digital signal processor (DSP) that communicates with a first pair of the cable and that includes a first echo canceller and a first finite impulse response filter with first taps; and

a second DSP that communicates with a second pair of the cable and that includes a second echo canceller and a second finite impulse response filter with second taps, wherein at least one of said physical layer device and said cable tester estimates skew between said first and second pairs based on values of said first and second taps.

2. The physical layer device of claim 1 further comprising an indicator for displaying at least one of said cable status, said estimated skew, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude.

3. The physical layer device of claim 1 wherein said physical layer device is implemented in a network device.

4. The physical layer device of claim 1 wherein said cable tester is integrated with said physical layer device in a single integrated circuit.

5. A physical layer device that communicates over a cable, comprising:

cable testing means for determining a cable status, which includes an open status, a short status and a normal status, wherein said cable tester includes:

pretest means for sensing activity on said cable and for selectively enabling testing based on said sensed activity;

test means that is enabled by said pretest module, for transmitting a test pulse on the cable, for measuring a reflection amplitude, for calculating a cable length, and for determining said cable status based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length;

first digital signal processor (DSP) means for communicating with a first pair of the cable and that includes a first echo canceller and a first finite impulse response filter with first taps; and

second DSP means for communicating with a second pair of the cable and that includes a second echo canceller and a second finite impulse response filter with second taps, wherein at least one of said physical layer device and said cable tester estimates skew between said first and second pairs based on values of said first and second taps.

6. The physical layer device of claim 5 further comprising indicating means for displaying at least one of said cable status, said estimated skew, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude.

7. The physical layer device of claim 5 wherein said physical layer device is implemented in a network device.

8. The physical layer device of claim 5 wherein said cable testing means is integrated with said physical layer device in a single integrated circuit.

9. A method of operating a physical layer device that communicates over a cable, comprising:

determining a cable status, which includes an open status, a short status and a normal status, wherein said determining includes:

sensing activity on the cable and selectively enabling testing based on said sensed activity;

transmitting a test pulse on the cable;
