Abstract

A counterbalance gas spring assembly comprising a piston assembly, bumper, and washer. The bumper is retained between the washer and the piston assembly. The washer is in contact with the rod to distribute the load to the bumper when the gas spring is opened.

Claims (17)

1 . A gas spring assembly comprising:

a tube having a substantially uniform internal diameter except for one portion having a smaller diameter;

a piston assembly within said tube attached to a rod, said rod extending through a washer and an opening in one end of said tube, said opening being near the portion having a smaller diameter; and

an elastomeric bumper, said elastomeric bumper being held in between said piston assembly and said washer;

wherein said elastomeric bumper becomes compressed when a force pulls said rod in a direction away from said tube and said washer engages with said portion being a smaller diameter.

2 . The gas spring assembly of claim 1 wherein said force creates a load on said gas spring assembly and said bumper reduces said load by at least about 40%.

3 . The gas spring assembly of claim 1 wherein said bumper is made of rubber.

4 . The gas spring assembly of claim 1 wherein said washer is attached to said bumper.

5 . The gas spring assembly of claim 1 wherein said smaller diameter is provided by an indent.

6 . A gas spring assembly comprising:

a tube having a substantially uniform internal diameter except for one portion having a smaller diameter;

a piston assembly attached to a rod having a thick portion and a thin portion within said tube, said rod extending through an opening in one end of said tube; and

an elastomeric bumper engaged with said thin portion of said rod, said elastomeric bumper being held in between said piston assembly and a washer;

wherein said elastomeric bumper becomes compressed when a force pulls said rod in a direction away from said tube and said washer engages with said portion having a smaller diameter.

7 . The gas spring assembly of claim 5 wherein said force creates a load on said gas spring assembly and said bumper reduces said load by at least about 40%.

8 . The gas spring assembly of claim 5 wherein said bumper is made of rubber.

9 . The gas spring assembly of claim 5 wherein said washer is attached to said bumper.
