Abstract

A variety of technologies are detailed that can be employed by state departments of motor vehicles (DMVs), and other agencies, e.g., to reduce customer wait time and otherwise improve customer satisfaction, to streamline workflow, and to enhance security.

Claims (24)

1 . In a method of producing a government-issued photo ID card, an improvement in which a user performs the following acts:

operating an image capture device to capture plural photo images of the user;

viewing at least two of the captured images; and

through a graphical user interface, indicating a particular image desired to be used on the government-issued photo ID card.

2 . The method of claim 1 that includes making said particular image available for purposes other than said photo ID card.

3 . The method of claim 2 in which said purpose is selected from a list consisting of: use as a passport photo, emailing by the user, creation of novelty items bearing the image, and use on a corporate photo ID.

4 . The method of claim 1 that includes checking at least one of said captured images to confirm that desired facial parameters can be extracted therefrom.

5 . The method of claim 1 in which the user operates the image capture device at the office of an issuing authority.

6 . The method of claim 1 in which the user operates the image capture device at the user's home.

7 . A government-issued photo ID card produced according to the method of claim 1 .

8 . In a method of producing a government-issued photo ID card, the card comprising a substrate and a portrait image, an improvement comprising receiving from an applicant an image of the applicant captured in the applicant's home, and employing said received image to form said portrait image on the card.

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein said applicant image is captured by an imaging device owned by the applicant.

10 . A government-issued photo ID card produced according to the method of claim 8 .

11 . In a method of producing a government-issued photo ID card, the card comprising a substrate and a portrait image, an improvement comprising the following acts:

transferring an image of an applicant, in an image file format, from the applicant's home to an issuing authority;

checking the image for compliance with technical standards required by the issuing authority; and

if the image is technically suitable, employing same on the government-issued photo ID card.

12 . The method of claim 11 in which said technical standards relate to at least one of: size, contrast, and suitability for extraction of facial metrics.

13 . The method of claim 11 that includes the acts:

using a computer device at the applicant's home, performing first processing on the image of the applicant in furtherance of meeting at least one of said technical standards;

transferring the once-processed image from the applicant's home to said computer associated with the issuing authority; and

at said computer associated with the issuing authority, performing second processing on said transferred image in furtherance of meeting at least one of said technical standards.

14 . The method of claim 13 in which said first processing comprises checking for compliance with a standard relating to size, contrast, or suitability for extraction of facial metrics.

15 . The method of claim 13 in which said second processing comprises rechecking compliance with a standard for which said first processing earlier checked for compliance.
