Abstract

Light emitting assemblies include a multilayer light emitting panel member that receives light from at least one light source. The panel member may have at least one solid light conducting or transmitting layer and at least one hollow light conducting or transmitting layer.

Claims (23)

1. A light emitting assembly comprising at least one light source, a multilayer light emitting panel member that receives light from the light source, the panel member having at least one solid light conducting or transmitting layer and at least one hollow light conducting or transmitting layer, and a tray of substrate that holds or positions the panel member.

2. The assembly of claim 1 which includes multiple light sources, and the light from the multiple light sources is mixed in at least a portion of the panel member.

3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one light source is a single LED with multicolored chips.

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one layer or surface of the panel member has deformities for causing light to be emitted from the panel member.

5. The assembly of claim 1 further comprising at least one sheet, film or substrate that has deformities, the sheet, film or substrate being positioned in close proximity to the panel member to direct the light emitted from the panel member in different directions to produce a desired light output distribution or effect.

6. The assembly of claim 1 further comprising a faceted or lensed surface in close proximity to the at least one light source for changing the output distribution of the light source to fit a particular application.

7. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one light source is positioned within the panel member.

8. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the panel member is modular.

9. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the solid light conducting or transmitting layer receives light from the at least one light source through an input surface on an edge of the solid light conducting or transmitting layer.

10. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the solid light conducting or transmitting layer is in close proximity to the at least one light source and has at least one angled, faceted or curved reflective or refractive surface that redirects some of the light in the light emitting assembly to fit a particular application.

11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the solid light conducting or transmitting layer has at least one reflective or refractive surface to facilitate better mixing of light.

12. The assembly of clam 1 wherein the solid light conducting or transmitting layer has at least one reflective or refractive surface to increase the overall efficiency of the system.

13. The assembly of claim 2 wherein two or more of the multiple light sources are different color light sources.

14. The assembly of claim 2 wherein the light sources are selectively operable to produce a desired effect.

15. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the deformities are prismatic or lenticular surfaces.

16. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the sheet, film or substrate is a diffuser.

17. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the sheet, film or substrate is positioned in spaced relation to the panel member to create an air gap that is the hollow light conducting or transmitting layer.

18. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the sheet, film or substrate has multiple layers, components or films.

19. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the light source is selectively operable and can be illuminated in a sequenced or predetermined pattern.

20. The assembly of claim 9 wherein the input surface is lens shaped to alter the input light ray angle distribution of the at least one light source.

21. A light emitting assembly comprising at least one light source, a multilayer light emitting panel member that receives light from the light source, the panel member having at least one solid light conducting or transmitting layer and at least one hollow light conducting or transmitting layer, and a faceted or lensed surface in close proximity to the at least one light source for changing the output distribution of the light source to fit a particular application.

22. A light emitting assembly comprising at least one light source, a multilayer light emitting panel member that receives light from the light source, the panel member having at least one solid light conducting or transmitting layer and at least one hollow light conducting or transmitting layer, wherein the solid light conducting or transmitting layer receives light from the at least one light source through an input surface on an edge of the solid light conducting or transmitting layer, and the input surface is lens shaped to alter the input light ray angle distribution of the at least one light source.

23. A light emitting assembly comprising at least one light source, a multilayer light emitting panel member that receives light from the light source, the panel member having at least one solid light conducting or transmitting layer and at least one hollow light conducting or transmitting layer, wherein the solid light conducting or transmitting layer is in close proximity to the at least one light source and has at least one angled, faceted or curved reflective or refractive surface that redirects some of the light in the light emitting assembly to fit a particular application.
