Abstract

Presbyopia and other eye disorders are treated by implanting within a plurality of elongated pockets formed in the tissue of the sclera of the eye transverse to a meridian of the eye, a prosthesis adapted for contact with the sclera of an eyeball, and comprising a body having a first end and a second end wherein the body has (i) a planform adapted to expand the contacted sclera to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball, and (ii) means for stabilizing the prosthesis within the surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball.

Claims (48)

1. A prosthesis that contacts a sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end, said body having a thickness that displaces an overlying portion of said contacted sclera to increase an effective working distance of a ciliary muscle of the eyeball; and

means for stabilizing said prosthesis within a surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball,

wherein said stabilizing means includes at least one of said first end and said second end that protrudes from said surgically formed pocket and fixes said body within said surgically formed pocket, and

wherein said at least one of said first end and said second end has a partially concave top surface.

The prosthesis set forth in claim 1 wherein the top surface is adapted to contact ocular tissue within said surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball, said first end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a first end of said pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket and said second end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a second, opposite end of the pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket.

3. The prosthesis set forth in claim 2 wherein said top surface is circumferentially shaped and adapted to exert an outward force on the scleral pocket to elevate the portion of the sclera attached thereto to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.

4. The prosthesis set forth in claim 2 wherein said stabilizing means includes a bottom surface that is adapted to contact ocular tissue within said surgically formed pocket.

5. The prosthesis set forth in claim 4 wherein said ocular tissue contact of said bottom surface of said body is at least substantially equal to said ocular tissue contact of said top surface of said body.

6. The prosthesis set forth in claim 1 wherein said second end is further distant from said first end than any other portion of said body.

7. The prosthesis set forth in claim 1 wherein said second end is at an opposite extremity of said body from said first end.

8. A prosthesis that contacts a sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end, said body having a thickness that displaces an overlying portion of said contacted sclera to increase an effective working distance of a ciliary muscle of the eyeball; and

means for stabilizing said prosthesis within a surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball,

wherein said stabilizing means includes at least one of said first end and said second end that protrudes from said surgically formed pocket and fixes said body within said surgically formed pocket, and

wherein said at least one of said first end and said second end has a partially convex top surface.

The prosthesis set forth in claim 8 wherein the top surface is adapted to contact ocular tissue within said surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball, said first end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a first end of said pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket and said second end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a second, opposite end of the pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket.

10. The prosthesis set forth in claim 9 wherein said top surface is circumferentially shaped and adapted to exert an outward force on the scleral pocket to elevate the portion of the sclera attached thereto to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.

11. The prosthesis set forth in claim 9 wherein said stabilizing means includes a bottom surface that is adapted to contact ocular tissue within said surgically formed pocket.

12. The prosthesis set forth in claim 11 wherein said ocular tissue contact of said bottom surface of said body is at least substantially equal to said ocular tissue contact of said top surface of said body.

13. A prosthesis that contacts a sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end, said body having a thickness that displaces an overlying portion of said contacted sclera to increase an effective working distance of a ciliary muscle of the eyeball; and

means for stabilizing said prosthesis within a surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball,

wherein said stabilizing means includes at least one of said first end and said second end that protrudes from said surgically formed pocket and fixes said body within said surgically formed pocket, and

wherein said at least one of said first end and said second end has a partially concave bottom surface.

The prosthesis set forth in claim 13 wherein said body further comprises a top surface that is adapted to contact ocular tissue within said surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball, said first end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a first end of said pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket and said second end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a second, opposite end of the pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket.

15. The prosthesis set forth in claim 14 wherein said top surface is circumferentially shaped and adapted to exert an outward force on the scleral pocket to elevate the portion of the sclera attached thereto to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.

16. A prosthesis that contacts a sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising:

a body having a first end and a second end, said body having a thickness that displaces an overlying portion of said contacted sclera to increase an effective working distance of a ciliary muscle of the eyeball; and

means for stabilizing said prosthesis within a surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball,

wherein said stabilizing means includes at least one of said first end and said second end that protrudes from said surgically formed pocket and fixes said body within said surgically formed pocket, and

wherein said at least one of said first end and said second end has a partially convex bottom surface.

The prosthesis set forth in claim 16 wherein said body further comprises a top surface that is adapted to contact ocular tissue within said surgically formed pocket within the sclera of the eyeball, said first end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a first end of said pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket and said second end adapted to rest on a surface region of the sclera outside a second, opposite end of the pocket when said prosthesis is inserted in the pocket.

18. The prosthesis set forth in claim 17 wherein said top surface is circumferentially shaped and adapted to exert an outward force on the scleral pocket to elevate the portion of the sclera attached thereto to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.

19. A prosthesis for contacting a sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising:

a body having at least one end portion which is wider than an incision forming a scleral pocket for containing said prosthesis, a remainder of said body extending from said at least one end portion in a direction substantially perpendicular to a width dimension of said at least one end portion,

a bottom surface of said body having at least one concave region separated from an end of said body by a flat surface,

said at least one concave region having a radius of curvature of approximately five hundred microns and a height of approximately one hundred fifty microns,

whereby said prosthesis exerts an outward force on said scleral pocket to elevate a portion of the sclera attached thereto when said prosthesis is disposed within said scleral pocket, and

wherein said at least one end portion is configured to extend beyond said scleral pocket.

20. The prosthesis as set forth in claim 19 , wherein said body includes a major convex surface having a radius of curvature of approximately nine millimeters.

21. The prosthesis as set forth in claim 19 , wherein the at least one end portion of said body is sloped.

22. A prosthesis for contacting a sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising:

a body having at least one end portion which is wider than an incision forming a scleral pocket for containing said prosthesis, a remainder of said body extending from said at least one end portion in a direction substantially perpendicular to a width dimension of said at least one end portion,

a bottom surface of said body having at least one concave region separated from an end of said body by a flat surface having a width of approximately five hundred microns,

said at least one concave region having a radius of curvature of approximately five hundred microns,

whereby said prosthesis exerts an outward force on said scleral pocket to elevate a portion of the sclera attached thereto when said prosthesis is disposed within said scleral pocket, and

wherein said at least one end portion is configured to extend beyond said scleral pocket.
