Abstract

The present invention is directed to a reconfigurable data communications system. The system includes a removable optical backplane connector with a first end and a second end, a first data communications card, and a switch fabric card. The first data communications card includes an optical port configured to receive the first end of the removable optical backplane connector. The switch fabric card has a plurality of optical ports adapted to receive the second end of the removable optical backplane connector.

Claims (35)

1. A reconfigurable data communication system comprising:

a removable optical waveguide for reconfiguring at least part of an optical backplane;

a node card having an optical port adapted to interface with the optical waveguide; and

a switch fabric card having an optical port adapted to interface with the optical waveguide.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said the node card further comprises an input port adapted to receive input signals.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the input signals are electrical signals.

4. The system of claim 2 wherein said input signals are optical signals.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein said node communications card is a service board.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical waveguide is an optical fiber.

7. The system of claim 1 further comprising an additional optical waveguide to provide for a reciprocal communications pathway between the node card and the switch fabric card.

8. The system of claim 1 further comprising an optical backplane having sockets wherein, the node card and the switch fabric card interface with at least some of the sockets.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the optical backplane comprises a plurality of optical communication pathways.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the switch fabric card comprises a plurality of optical ports to interface with the plurality of optical pathways of the optical backplane.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the switch fabric card comprises a plurality of optical transducers.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the node card is disposed within a first chassis and the switch fabric card is disposed within a second chassis.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the node card and the switch fabric card is disposed within a single chassis.

14. A reconfigurable data communication system comprising:

a removable optical waveguide for reconfiguring at least part of an optical backplane;

a line card in electrical communication with a first optical port adapted to interface with the optical waveguide; and

a switch fabric card in electrical communication with a second optical port adapted to interface with the optical waveguide.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein, the first optical port is disposed on an external printed circuit board that interfaces with the line card.

16. The system of claim 14 wherein, the second optical port is disposed on an external printed circuit board that interfaces with the switch fabric card.

17. The system of claim 14 wherein, the first optical port is disposed on the line card.

18. The system of claim 14 wherein, the second optical port is disposed on the switch fabric card.

19. The system of claim 14 wherein said the line card further comprises an input port adapted to receive input signals.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein the input signals are electrical signals.

21. The system of claim 19 wherein said input signals are optical signals.

22. The system of claim 14 wherein the optical waveguide is an optical fiber.

23. The system of claim 14 further comprising an additional optical waveguide to provide for a reciprocal communications pathway between the line card and the switch fabric card.

24. The system of claim 14 further comprising an optical backplane having sockets wherein, the line card and the switch fabric card interface with al least some of the sockets.

25. The system of claim 24 wherein the optical backplane comprises a plurality of optical communication pathways.

26. The system of claim 25 wherein the switch fabric card comprises a plurality of optical ports to interface with the plurality of optical pathways of the optical backplane.

27. The system of claim 26 wherein the switch fabric card comprises a plurality of optical transducers.

28. The system of claim 14 wherein the line card is disposed within a first chassis and the switch fabric card is disposed within a second chassis.

29. The system of claim 14 wherein the line card and the switch fabric card is disposed within a single chassis.
