Abstract

An OCB mode liquid crystal display panel comprises a pair of electrode substrates, a liquid crystal layer which is held between the pair of electrode substrates and has liquid crystal molecules whose alignment state is controlled within a display area by a drive voltage applied from the electrode substrates, and a pair of alignment films which are disposed on the electrode substrates in contact with the liquid crystal layer and whose rubbing directions are set parallel to each other. The display area includes a plurality of pixels arrayed in a matrix, and the rubbing directions of the alignment films are substantially opposite to a scanning direction in which rows of the pixels are sequentially selected for application of the drive voltage in a display operation.

Claims (12)

1. An OCB mode liquid crystal display panel comprising:

a pair of electrode substrates;

a liquid crystal layer which is held between said pair of electrode substrates and has liquid crystal molecules whose alignment state is controlled within a display area by a drive voltage applied from said electrode substrates; and

a pair of alignment films which are disposed on said pair of electrode substrates in contact with said liquid crystal layer and whose rubbing directions are set parallel to each other;

wherein said display area includes a plurality of pixels arrayed in a matrix, and the rubbing directions of said alignment films are substantially opposite to a scanning direction in which rows of said pixels are sequentially selected for application of the drive voltage in a display operation.

2. The display panel according to claim 1 , wherein the rubbing directions of said alignment films coincide with a scanning direction in which rows of said pixels are sequentially selected for application of the drive voltage in an aging process for moving the impurity ions contained in said liquid crystal layer outside the display area by a flow of the liquid crystal molecules.

3. The display panel according to claim 1 , further comprising a drive circuit configured to periodically apply an inverse-transfer preventing voltage for maintaining the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules in a bend alignment, as the drive voltage to each row of said pixels.

4. A method for driving an OCB mode liquid crystal display panel which includes a pair of electrode substrates, a liquid crystal layer which is held between said pair of electrode substrates and has liquid crystal molecules whose alignment state is controlled within a display area by a drive voltage applied from said electrode substrates, and a pair of alignment films which are disposed on said pair of electrode substrates in contact with said liquid crystal layer and whose rubbing directions are set parallel to each other, and in which said display area includes a plurality of pixels arrayed in a matrix, the method comprising the steps of:

sequentially selecting rows of said pixels in a scanning direction substantially opposite to the rubbing directions of said alignment films to perform a display operation; and

applying the drive voltage to the pixels of a selected row.

5. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising a step of sequentially selecting rows of said pixels in a scanning direction substantially identical to the rubbing directions of said alignment films and applying the drive voltage to the pixels of a selected row to perform an aging process for moving the impurity ions contained in said liquid crystal layer outside the display area by a flow of the liquid crystal molecules.

6. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising a step of periodically applying an inverse-transfer preventing voltage for maintaining the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules in a bend alignment, as the drive voltage to each row of said pixels.
