Abstract

Certain exemplary embodiments can comprise a system comprising an electric drive system for a machine. The system can comprise a rectifier adapted to convert AC power from an alternator to DC power. The system can comprise an inverter adapted to receive DC power from the rectifier and provide power to a traction motor and/or auxiliary devices. Certain exemplary embodiments can comprise a system and method for dissipating excess energy from a machine.

Claims (46)

1. A method comprising:

at an auxiliary power system for an off-road traction vehicle, comprising:

via an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier, converting a first AC signal to a DC signal and providing the DC signal to a DC bus;

via an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor inverter electrically coupled to the DC bus, converting the DC signal to a second AC signal and providing the second AC signal to an auxiliary device; and

receiving the DC signal at an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper, the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper electrically coupled to the DC bus.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

from an alternator, receiving the first AC signal at the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

from an alternator coupled to an internal combustion engine, receiving the first AC signal at the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper

is adapted to modulate unmodulated DC current.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier provides the DC signal to the DC bus at a voltage of approximately 1800 volts.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

supplying the second AC signal to an auxiliary device via a transformer electrically coupled to the active Insulating Bipolar Transistor inverter.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

supplying the second AC signal to an auxiliary device via a sinusoidal filter electrically coupled to said active Insulating Bipolar Transistor inverter.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

supplying the second AC signal to an auxiliary device via a filter-less system adapted to limit harmonic current distortion to approximately 5%.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

supplying the second AC signal to an auxiliary device via a filter-less system adapted to limit harmonic current distortion to approximately 3%.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

supplying the second AC signal to an auxiliary device via a filter-less system adapted to limit harmonic current distortion to approximately 2%.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

via the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier, providing the DC signal with an active input power factor of approximately 0.98.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

via the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier, providing the DC signal with an active input power factor of approximately 0.99.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

via the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier, providing the DC signal with an active input power factor of approximately 1.0.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second AC signal is space vector modulated.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second AC signal is a sine wave Pulse Wave Modulated DC voltage.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second AC signal is a sine wave output signal with less than approximately 5% total harmonic distortion.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second AC signal has a frequency of approximately 60 Hz.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second AC signal has a frequency of approximately 90 Hz.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second AC signal has a frequency of approximately 120 Hz.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier lacks a filter.

21. A method comprising:

at a mining haul truck:

via an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier, converting a first AC signal to a DC signal and providing the DC signal to a DC bus;

via an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor inverter electrically coupled to the DC bus, converting the DC signal to a second AC signal and providing the second AC signal to an auxiliary device; and

receiving the DC signal at an active insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper, the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper electrically coupled to the DC bus.

22. A method comprising a plurality of activities, said activities comprising:

from an alternator, receiving a first AC signal at an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier; and

via the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor rectifier, providing a DC signal to an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor inverter adapted to provide a second AC signal to an auxiliary power system; and

receiving the DC signal at an active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper, the active Insulating Gate Bipolar Transistor DC chopper electrically coupled to the DC bus.
