Abstract

A bone fixation system includes a bone fixation element adapted for mounting on a bone of a patient. The bone fixation element has a body with a channel extending through a portion thereof. A line extends through the channel of the bone fixation element. A tubular collet is at least partially disposed within the channel of the bone fixation element and has the line extending therethrough. The tubular collet includes a threaded portion engaging with the bone fixation element and a nose portion having a least one slit formed thereon. The collet is configured such that when the collet is further advanced into the channel of the bone fixation element at least a portion of the nose portion radially inwardly constricts to securely engage the line.

Claims (29)

1. A bone fixation system comprising:

a bone fixation element adapted for mounting on a bone of a patient, the bone fixation element comprising a body having a channel extending through a portion thereof;

a line extending through the channel of the bone fixation element, wherein the line is flexible; and

a tubular collet at least partially disposed within the channel of the bone fixation element and having the line extending through the tubular collet, the tubular collet comprising a threaded portion engaging with the bone fixation element and a nose portion having at least one slit formed thereon, the collet being configured such that when the collet is further advanced into the channel of the bone fixation element at least a portion of the nose portion radially inwardly constricts to securely engage the line.

2. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the body of the bone fixation element is elongated with a longitudinal axis extending between a first end and an opposing second end, the channel extending along the longitudinal axis.

3. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first end of the body is tapered.

4. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 3 , wherein the second end of the body has a polygonal transverse cross section so that the second end can selectively engage with a driver.

5. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the bone fixation element comprises a bone screw having one or more helical threads outwardly projecting from an exterior surface of the body.

6. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the body of the bone fixation element has an interior surface that bounds the channel, at least a portion of the interior surface having a thread formed thereon that is threadedly engaged with the threaded portion of the tubular collet.

7. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 6 , wherein a portion of the interior surface of the bone fixation element is radially, inwardly tapered, the nose portion of the collet biasing against the tapered portion of the bone fixation element when the collet is advanced into the channel.

8. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the line comprises braided wire.

9. The bone fixation system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the line has a first end with a loop formed thereat.

10. A method comprising:

securing a bone fixation element to a bone, the bone fixation element having a flexible line extending through a channel of the bone fixation element; and

threading a tubular collet having the flexible line extending therethrough into the channel of the bone fixation element so that a portion of the tubular collet radially inwardly constricts to engage the flexible line, the tubular collet having a thread formed on an exterior surface of the collet.

11. The method as recited in claim 10 , where the step of securing comprises screwing the bone fixation element into a bone so that a thread formed on an exterior surface of the bone fixation element threads into and engages with the bone.

12. The method as recited in claim 10 , further comprising securing a graft to the flexible line.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the graft is a graft ligament.

14. The method as recited in claim 10 , wherein the act of threading the tubular collet comprises rotating the tubular collet within the channel of the bone fixation element such that a thread formed on an interior surface of the bone fixation element that bounds the channel threadedly engages with the thread formed on the exterior surface of the collet.

15. A method comprising:

forming a tunnel on a bone;

advancing a first end of a flexible line through the tunnel;

passing the flexible line through a cannulated bone fixation element and a tubular collet, the tubular collet having a thread formed on an exterior surface of the collet;

securing the bone fixation element within the tunnel on the bone; and

threading the tubular collet into the bone fixation element so that a tapered nose portion of the tubular collet having at least one slit formed thereon radially inwardly constricts to engage the flexible line.

16. The method as recited in claim 15 , where the step of securing comprises screwing the bone fixation element into the tunnel so that a thread formed on an exterior surface of the bone fixation element threads into and engages with the bone.

17. The method as recited in claim 15 , further comprising securing a graft to the flexible line.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the graft is a graft ligament.

19. The method as recited in claim 15 , wherein the act of threading the tubular collet comprises rotating the tubular collect within a channel of the bone fixation element such that a thread formed on an interior surface of the bone fixation element that bounds the channel threadedly engages with the thread formed on the exterior surface of the collect.
