Mounting configuration and method for a motorcycle seat
View Patent ↗A seat assembly for a motorcycle that includes a frame. The seat assembly includes a seat cushion, a seat pan coupled to the seat cushion, and a front mount that extends from a forward portion of the seat pan. A rear mount extends from a rearward portion of the seat pan and a central mounting portion is located on the seat pan between the front and rear mounts. The central mounting portion defines a frame mount that latches to the frame when the seat assembly is in a first position with respect to the frame, and that releases from the frame when the seat assembly is in a second position with respect to the frame.
1. A seat assembly for a motorcycle, the motorcycle including a frame, the seat assembly comprising:
a seat cushion;
a seat pan coupled to the seat cushion;
a front mount extending from a forward portion of the seat pan;
a rear mount extending from a rearward portion of the seat pan; and
a central mounting portion located on the seat pan between the front and rear mounts, the central mounting portion defining a frame mount that latches to the frame when the seat assembly is slid rearwardly to a first position with respect to the frame, and that releases from the frame when the seat assembly is slid forwardly to a second position with respect to the frame.
2. The seat assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rear mount includes a rearward mounting tab that extends rearwardly of the seat pan and defines an opening, the seat assembly further comprising a fastener extending through the opening and coupling the seat assembly to the motorcycle.
3. The seat assembly of claim 1 , wherein the seat pan is formed of a polymer, and the central mounting portion is formed of a metal.

The seat assembly of claim 1 , wherein the front and rear mounts are each coupled to the seat pan, wherein the seat pan is formed of a first material, and wherein the front mount, the rear mount, and the central mounting portion are formed of a second material having increased strength with respect to the first material.
5. The seat assembly of claim 1 , wherein the front mount includes a forward mounting tab that extends forwardly of the seat pan.
6. The seat assembly of claim 1 , wherein the frame mount comprises one of a mounting stud and a mounting aperture, and wherein the other of the mounting stud and the mounting aperture is provided on the frame.
7. The seat assembly of claim 6 , wherein the mounting aperture is substantially keyhole-shaped and the mounting stud includes an enlarged end portion.

The seat assembly of claim 7 , wherein the mounting aperture includes a hole portion and a slot portion, wherein the slot portion is positioned forwardly of the hole portion, and wherein the seat assembly is moved rearwardly from the second position to the first position during installation to position the mounting stud within the slot portion.
9. The seat assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a strap coupled to the central mounting portion.
10. The seat assembly of claim 9 , wherein the central mounting portion includes a first mounting post and a second mounting post, and wherein first and second ends of the strap are coupled to the first and second mounting posts respectively.
11. The seat assembly of claim 9 , wherein the strap extends around the seat cushion.
12. A seat assembly for a motorcycle, the motorcycle including a frame, the seat assembly comprising:
a seat cushion;
a seat pan coupled to the seat cushion;
a front mount extending from a forward portion of the seat pan;
a rear mount extending from a rearward portion of the seat pan; and
a central mounting portion located on the seat pan between the front and rear mounts, the central mounting portion defining a frame mount that latches to the frame when the seat assembly is in a first position with respect to the frame, and that releases from the frame when the seat assembly is in a second position with respect to the frame;
wherein the frame mount comprises one of a mounting stud and a mounting aperture;
wherein the other of the mounting stud and the mounting aperture is provided on the frame; and
wherein the mounting aperture is substantially keyhole-shaped and the mounting stud includes an enlarged end portion.
13. The seat assembly of claim 12 , wherein the rear mount includes a rearward mounting tab that extends rearwardly of the seat pan and defines an opening, the seat assembly further comprising a fastener extending through the opening and coupling the seat assembly to the motorcycle.
14. The seat assembly of claim 12 , wherein the seat pan is formed of a polymer, and the central mounting portion is formed of a metal.
15. The seat assembly of claim 12 , wherein the front and rear mounts are each coupled to the seat pan, wherein the seat pan is formed of a first material, and wherein the front mount, the rear mount, and the central mounting portion are formed of a second material having increased strength with respect to the first material.
16. The seat assembly of claim 12 , wherein the front mount includes a forward mounting tab that extends forwardly of the seat pan.
17. The seat assembly of claim 12 , wherein the mounting aperture includes a hole portion and a slot portion, wherein the slot portion is positioned forwardly of the hole portion, and wherein the seat assembly is moved rearwardly from the second position to the first position during installation to position the mounting stud within the slot portion.
18. The seat assembly of claim 12 , further comprising a strap coupled to the central mounting portion.
19. The seat assembly of claim 18 , wherein the central mounting portion includes a first mounting post and a second mounting post, and wherein first and second ends of the strap are coupled to the first and second mounting posts respectively.
20. The seat assembly of claim 18 , wherein the strap extends around the seat cushion.
21. A seat assembly for a motorcycle, the motorcycle including a frame, the seat assembly comprising:
a seat cushion;
a seat pan coupled to the seat cushion;
a front mount extending from a forward portion of the seat pan;
a rear mount extending from a rearward portion of the seat pan;
a central mounting portion located on the seat pan between the front and rear mounts, the central mounting portion defining a frame mount that latches to the frame when the seat assembly is in a first position with respect to the frame, and that releases from the frame when the seat assembly is in a second position with respect to the frame; and
a strap coupled to the central mounting portion.
22. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the rear mount includes a rearward mounting tab that extends rearwardly of the seat pan and defines an opening, the seat assembly further comprising a fastener extending through the opening and coupling the seat assembly to the motorcycle.
23. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the seat pan is formed of a polymer, and the central mounting portion is formed of a metal.
24. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the front and rear mounts are each coupled to the seat pan, wherein the seat pan is formed of a first material, and wherein the front mount, the rear mount, and the central mounting portion are formed of a second material having increased strength with respect to the first material.
25. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the front mount includes a forward mounting tab that extends forwardly of the seat pan.
26. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the frame mount comprises one of a mounting stud and a mounting aperture, and wherein the other of the mounting stud and the mounting aperture is provided on the frame.
27. The seat assembly of claim 26 , wherein the mounting aperture is substantially keyhole-shaped and the mounting stud includes an enlarged end portion.
28. The seat assembly of claim 27 , wherein the mounting aperture includes a hole portion and a slot portion, wherein the slot portion is positioned forwardly of the hole portion, and wherein the seat assembly is moved rearwardly from the second position to the first position during installation to position the mounting stud within the slot portion.
29. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the central mounting portion includes a first mounting post and a second mounting post, and wherein first and second ends of the strap are coupled to the first and second mounting posts respectively.
30. The seat assembly of claim 21 , wherein the strap extends around the seat cushion.
