Abstract

A vehicle seat assembly that includes a seatback frame and an active head restraint system. The active head restraint system includes a head restraint adapted to move between an upright position and an operative position relative to the seatback frame in response to an input force applied to the active head restraint system. The head restraint is biased to resist movement away from the upright position and toward the operative position. Also, the resistance to movement of the head restraint decreases as the head restraint moves away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

Claims (27)

1. A vehicle seat assembly comprising:

a seatback frame;

an active head restraint system including a head restraint adapted to move between an upright position and an operative position relative to said seatback frame in response to an input force applied to said active head restraint system and at least one biasing member operable to provide resistance to movement of said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position; and

at least one linkage moveably attaching said active head restraint system to said seatback frame at a pivot point, wherein said biasing member is operatively attached to said linkage at an attachment point, said attachment point is offset in spaced relationship to said pivot point, said biasing member defines a line of action, and a reference line extending from said pivot point to said attachment point is offset at a positive angle relative to a bias moment arm extending perpendicularly from said line of action to said pivot point.

2. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said biasing member is a coiled extension spring.

3. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein the reference line is offset between approximately twenty-five degrees (25°) and thirty-five degrees (35°) relative to the bias moment arm.

4. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein a coupling force initiated by the input force is applied to said linkage at at least one coupling point, said coupling point offset in spaced relationship to said pivot point.

5. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said active head restraint system further comprises an upper armature and a lower armature operatively attached to said upper armature, said lower armature operable to act on and move said upper armature in response to the input force applied to said lower armature to thereby move said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

6. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said lower armature is operable to move toward said upper armature in response to the input force applied to said lower armature and act on said upper armature to move said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

7. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 5 further including a rearward side, wherein said lower armature is operable to move toward said rearward side in response to the input force applied to said lower armature and act on said upper armature to move said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

8. A vehicle seat assembly comprising:

a seatback frame;

an active head restraint system with an upper armature pivotally attached to said seatback frame at at least one pivot point and adapted to receive a coupling force initiated by an input force from an occupant, said upper armature including a head restraint adapted to move away from an upright position and toward an operative position relative to said seatback frame in response to the coupling force; and

at least one biasing member operatively attached to said upper armature operable to provide a bias force causing a resistance to movement of said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position;

wherein said coupling force imparts a coupling moment at said pivot point and has a coupling moment arm relative to said pivot point, wherein the bias force imparts a bias moment at said pivot point and has a bias moment arm relative to said pivot point, wherein the coupling moment arm and the bias moment arm each change as said head restraint moves away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

9. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein the coupling moment arm increases and the bias moment arm decreases as said head restraint moves away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

10. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said biasing member is a coiled extension spring.

11. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein the bias moment arm and a reference line extending from said pivot point to said attachment point are offset at a positive angle when said head restraint is in the upright position.

12. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 11 wherein the bias moment arm is offset between approximately twenty-five degrees (25°) and thirty-five degrees (35°) relative to the reference line.

13. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein the bias moment arm is offset at approximately thirty degrees (30°) relative to the reference line.

14. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said active head restraint system further comprises a lower armature operatively attached to said upper armature at said coupling point, said lower armature operable to act on and apply the coupling force to said upper armature at said coupling point in response to the input force to thereby move said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

15. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 14 further including a rearward side, wherein said lower armature is operable to move toward said rearward side in response to the input force and apply the coupling force at said coupling point to thereby move said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

16. A vehicle seat assembly as set forth in claim 14 wherein said lower armature is operable to move toward said upper armature in response to the input force applied to said lower armature and act on said upper armature to move said head restraint away from the upright position and toward the operative position.

17. A vehicle seat assembly comprising:

a seatback frame defining a rearward side;

an active head restraint system including an upper armature and a lower armature operatively attached to said upper armature at at least one coupling point, said lower armature operable to move toward said rearward side in response to an input force applied to said lower armature and apply a coupling force at said coupling point, said upper armature including a head restraint adapted to move away from an upright position and toward an operative position in response to the coupling force; and that is biased to resist movement away from the upright position and toward the operative position; and

at least one linkage moveably attaching said active head restraint system to said seatback frame at a pivot point, wherein said biasing member is operatively attached to said linkage at an attachment point, said attachment point is offset in spaced relationship to said pivot point, said biasing member defines a line of action, and a reference line extending from said pivot point to said attachment point is offset at a positive angle relative to a bias moment arm extending perpendicularly from said line of action to said pivot point.
