Abstract

An apparatus is provided for producing pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical-like product. The apparatus provides real-time monitoring of the pharmaceutical product and can provide real-time control. The apparatus monitors the dosage both before and after it has been added to a carrier substrate. The apparatus can provide monitoring of each pharmaceutical product that is processed.

Claims (34)

1. A pharmaceutical machine that produces a pharmaceutical product, the pharmaceutical product having a carrier substrate and a dosage of active agent, the machine comprising:

a holder for receiving said carrier substrate;

a dispensing module for adding said dosage of active agent to said carrier substrate;

a conveyor for receiving and moving said holder disposed thereon, wherein said conveyor moves said holder along the machine and to said dispensing module, so that said dosage of active agent can be added to said carrier substrate;

a dose inspection device for determining an amount of said dosage of active agent that has been added to said carrier substrate, wherein said dose inspection device performs optical profilometry on said carrier substrate to determine said amount of said dosage of active agent; and

a control system in communication with said conveyor and said dose inspection device, wherein said control system controls said conveyor to move said holder as said dose inspection device performs said optical profilometry.

2. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said dispensing module and said dose inspection device are connected to a gantry that spans said conveyor.

3. The machine of claim 2 , wherein said conveyor moves said holder along a longitudinal axis of the machine, and said dispensing module and said dose inspection device move along an axis of said gantry, wherein said longitudinal axis of the machine is traverse to said axis of said gantry.

4. The machine of claim 3 , wherein said carrier substrate is a pharmaceutical tablet.

5. The machine of claim 3 , wherein said dispensing module moves along said axis of said gantry while adding said dosage of active agent to said carrier substrate.

6. The machine of claim 5 , wherein said dispensing module dispenses said dosage of active agent as said carrier substrate continues to move along said longitudinal axis of the machine.

7. The machine of claim 3 , wherein said dose inspection device moves along said axis of said gantry while performing said optical profilometry.

8. The machine of claim 7 , wherein dose inspection device performs said optical profilometry while said carrier substrate continues to move along said longitudinal axis of the machine.

9. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said carrier substrate is a pharmaceutical tablet.

10. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said dispensing module adds said dosage of active agent to said carrier substrate while said conveyor continues to move said holder along the machine.

11. The pharmaceutical machine of claim 1 , wherein said dosage of active agent added by said dispensing module is a liquid droplet.

12. A method of providing quality control for a pharmaceutical machine comprising:

conveying a plurality of carrier substrates to a dispensing module;

adding a dosage of active agent to each of said plurality of said carrier substrates;

performing optical profilometry on each of said plurality of carrier substrates

controlling said conveying step to occur as said optical profilometry is performed on said carrier substrates; and

determining an amount of each of said dosages of active agent that have been added to each of said plurality of carrier substrates based on said optical profilometry,

wherein said optical profilometry is performed while each of said plurality of carrier substrates continues to move along the pharmaceutical machine.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising adjusting said amount of said dosage of active agent added to each of said carrier substrates based on said optical profilometry.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein said carrier substrate is a pharmaceutical tablet.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein said dosage of active agent is a liquid droplet.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising the step of controlling said conveying step to occur as said dosage of active agent is added to said carrier substrates.

17. A pharmaceutical machine that produces a pharmaceutical product, the pharmaceutical product having a carrier substrate and a dosage of active agent, the machine comprising:

a holder for receiving said carrier substrate;

a dispensing module for adding said dosage of active agent to said carrier substrate;

a conveyor for receiving and moving said holder disposed thereon, wherein said conveyor moves said holder along the machine and to said dispensing module, so that said dosage of active agent can be added to said carrier substrate;

a control system in communication with said conveyor and said dispensing module, wherein said control system controls said conveyor to move said holder as said dispensing module adds said dosage of active agent to said carrier substrate; and

a dose inspection device for determining an amount of said dosage of active agent that has been added to said carrier substrate, wherein said dose inspection device performs optical profilometry on said carrier substrate to determine said amount of said dosage of active agent.

18. The pharmaceutical machine of claim 17 , wherein said dosage of active agent added by said dispensing module is a liquid droplet.
