Abstract

Disclosed are structural materials including polymeric reinforcment fibers that can provide added strength and fracture toughness to the matrix. The polymeric reinforcement fibers are polypropylene-based monofilament fibers or tape fibers exhibiting extremely favorable mechanical characteristics for structural reinforcement including modulus greater than 12 MPa and elongation less than about 10%. The disclosed reinforced composite materials can exhibit desired average residual strength values with less total fiber loading necessary to attain the ARS values as compared to previously known polymer reinforced materials. Very high strength and fracture toughness can be attained in the disclosed composite materials.

Claims (15)

1. A composite material comprising:

a matrix material; and

a plurality of discrete polymeric fibers defining a length of less than about 5 inches dispersed throughout the matrix material, wherein the polymeric component of the fibers is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene homopolymers, polypropylene copolymers and mixtures thereof, wherein the fibers describe an elastic modulus greater than about 10 GPa and an elongation less than about 10%, and wherein the composite material exhibits an average residual strength greater than about 1.5 MPa at a fiber load value of less than about 14 pounds of fibers per cubic yard of matrix material.

2. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers describe an elastic modulus greater than about 14 GPa.

3. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers describe an elastic modulus greater than about 16 GPa.

4. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers describe an elongation less than about 8%.

5. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers describe an elongation less than about 6%.

6. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the matrix material is a concrete.

7. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the matrix material is gypsum.

8. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric component of the fibers is polypropylene homopolymer.

9. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the composite material exhibits a fiber loading value between about 5 and about 7 pounds of fibers per cubic yard of matrix material describes an average residual strength greater than 1.80 MPa.

10. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers comprise monofilament fibers.

11. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers are fibrillated or deformed.

12. The composite material of claim 1 , wherein the fibers are monofilament fibers and the composite material describes an average residual strength greater than or equal to 2 Mpa.

13. The composite material of claim 1 , the material further comprising a second plurality of discrete fibers, the second plurality of discrete fibers being selected from the group consisting of steel fibers, carbon fibers, poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide fibers, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers, liquid crystal fibers, polyvinyl alcohol fibers, and glass fibers.
