Abstract

An exercise system includes a local system having an exercise apparatus and an associated local computer, where the local computer controls and monitors the operation and use, respectively, of the exercise apparatus. The system further includes a remote system having a remote computer, and a transmission medium preferably including the Internet that couples the local system to the remote system for data communication between the local system and the remote system. The remote system may receive local system data from the local system concerning the use of the exercise apparatus, and the local system may receive remote system data from the remote system concerning the operation of the exercise apparatus. The local computer preferably controls the operation of the exercise apparatus based upon a modifiable script stored in a read/write memory of the local computer, which can be updated by the remote system. A method for controlling an exercise apparatus includes running a modifiable script on a local computer to control the use and to monitor the operation of an exercise apparatus, and communicating with a remote system, preferably via the Internet, to provide the remote system with data concerning the use of the exercise apparatus. The script is stored in read/write memory of the local computer and remote system data received from the remote system may include at least a portion of a new script to be stored in the read/write memory of the local computer.

Claims (30)

1. An exercise system comprising:

a mobile unit including at least one mobile exercise monitoring sensor coupled to mobile exercise equipment for monitoring a mobile exercise activity performed by a user on said mobile exercise equipment, said mobile unit at least temporarily storing, in memory, mobile exercise activity data sensed by said at least one mobile exercise monitoring sensor, said mobile unit communicating said mobile exercise activity data to a mobile system for communication over a wide area network;

a fixed local unit including at least one local exercise monitoring sensor coupled to fixed local exercise equipment for monitoring a local exercise activity performed by a user on said fixed local exercise equipment, said fixed local unit at least temporarily storing, in memory, local exercise activity data sensed by said at least one local exercise monitoring sensor, said fixed local unit communicating said local exercise activity data to a local server for communication over said wide area network; and

a remote server coupled to said wide area network for receiving via said wide area network said mobile exercise activity data and said local exercise activity data, said remote server selectively storing said mobile and local exercise activity data in a computer-readable media, wherein said remote server processes said mobile and local exercise activity data by comparing said mobile and local exercise activity data and scaling said mobile and local exercise activity data based on differences between said mobile exercise equipment and said fixed local exercise equipment.

2. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 wherein said mobile exercise equipment comprises at least one of a bicycle and an athletic shoe.

3. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said mobile unit is in wireless communication with said mobile system.

4. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 wherein said monitoring sensor includes a transducer developing an analog signal and an analog-to-digital converter which converts said analog signal to a digital signal.

5. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 wherein said monitoring sensor includes a global positioning system (GPS) unit.

6. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said fixed local exercise equipment comprises at least one of a stationary bicycle, a rowing machine, a step machine, and a treadmill.

7. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said fixed local unit is in wireless communication with said local server.

8. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said mobile system is associated with a pacer vehicle separate from said mobile unit.

9. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein mobile exercise activity performed by a user on said mobile exercise equipment results in physical travel of the user over a substantial distance.

10. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the user of said fixed local exercise equipment remains in substantially the same location while performing local exercise activity on said fixed local exercise equipment.

11. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein said remote server processes said mobile and local exercise activity data by comparing an actual distance traveled by the user of said mobile exercise equipment to a virtual distance traveled by the user of said fixed local exercise equipment.

12. An exercise system as recited in claim 1 , wherein,

said mobile unit comprising a bicycle and said at least one mobile exercise monitoring sensor coupled to said bicycle, wherein riding said bicycle results in physical travel of the user over a substantial distance;

said fixed local unit comprising a treadmill and said at least one local exercise monitoring sensor coupled to said treadmill; and

said remote server is associated with a website.

13. An exercise system as recited in claim 12 , wherein said remote server processes said mobile and local exercise activity data by scaling said mobile exercise activity data or said local exercise activity data to account for the differences between said bicycle and said treadmill.

14. An exercise system comprising:

a mobile unit including mobile exercise equipment and a sensor associated with said mobile exercise equipment for monitoring a mobile exercise activity performed by a user on said mobile exercise equipment and developing mobile exercise activity data, said mobile unit communicating said mobile exercise activity data to a mobile system, said mobile system comprising a mobile server for communicating said mobile exercise activity data over a wide area network;

a fixed local unit including fixed local exercise equipment and a sensor associated with said fixed local exercise equipment for monitoring a local exercise activity performed by a user on said fixed local exercise equipment and developing local exercise activity data, said fixed local unit communicating said local exercise activity data over said wide area network; and

a remote server coupled to said wide area network for receiving said mobile exercise activity data and said local exercise activity data, wherein said remote server processes and handicaps said mobile and local exercise activity data by scaling said mobile exercise activity data or said local exercise activity data to account for i) said mobile and fixed local exercise equipment being different types of exercise equipment, ii) differences in operating parameters of said mobile and fixed local exercise equipment, or iii) differences in environmental conditions at said mobile unit and said fixed local unit.

15. An exercise system as recited in claim 14 , wherein said remote server communicates results of the processing and handicapping of said mobile and local exercise activity data to the users of said mobile and fixed local exercise equipment.

16. An exercise system as recited in claim 15 , wherein said results comprise an indication of a winner of a race between the users of said mobile and fixed local exercise equipment.

17. An exercise system as recited in claim 14 , wherein said mobile server is caffied or worn by the user of said mobile exercise equipment.

18. An exercise system comprising:

a mobile unit comprising i) mobile exercise equipment upon which a user can perform a mobile exercise activity, ii) a mobile sensor coupled to said mobile exercise equipment for monitoring said mobile exercise activity and developing mobile exercise activity data representative of said mobile exercise activity, and iii) a mobile server caffied or worn by the user of said mobile exercise equipment, said mobile server being in wireless communication with said mobile sensor, said mobile sensor communicating said mobile exercise activity data to said mobile server, said mobile server communicating said mobile exercise activity data over a wide area network;

a fixed local unit comprising i) fixed local exercise equipment upon which a user can perform a local exercise activity, ii) a local sensor coupled to said fixed local exercise equipment for monitoring said local exercise activity and developing local exercise activity data representative of said local exercise activity, and iii) a local server associated with said mobile exercise equipment, said mobile server being in communication with said local sensor, said local sensor communicating said local exercise activity data to said local server, said local server communicating said local exercise activity data over said wide area network; and
