Abstract

The present invention relates to an elongated medical device for intralumenal manipulation during a process of magnetic resonance imaging. The device includes an elongated body. An extrusion material is integrated with the elongated body and includes a hydrophilic polymer that incorporates a substance having a plurality of paramagnetic ions. The extrusion material is configured to enhance magnetic resonance visibility during said process of magnetic resonance imaging.

29 . A method of constructing a medical device, comprising:

co-extruding a composition and an elongated body, the composition comprising a hydrophilic polymer and a plurality of paramagnetic ions.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the

plurality of paramagnetic ions comprise a paramagnetic metal salt, a paramagnetic metal chelate, or a paramagnetic metal complex.

31 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the medical device comprises: balloon.

32 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the plurality of paramagnetic ions comprises: a paramagnetic metal salt.

33 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the plurality of paramagnetic ions comprises: a gadolinium material.

34 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the plurality of paramagnetic ions comprises: a Gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid material.

35 . The method of claim 29 , comprising extruding the hydrophilic polymer on an inner lumen surface of the elongated body.

36 . The method of claim 29 , comprising extruding the hydrophilic polymer on an outer surface of the elongated body.

37 . The method of claim 29 , comprising extruding the hydrophilic polymer on an outer surface and an inner lumen surface of the elongated body.

The method of claim 29 , wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, polyvinyl-pyrrolidone and hydrophilic polyurethane, polycarboxylic acids, cellulosic polymers, gelatin, maleic anhydride polymers, polyamides, polyvinyl alcohols, and polyacrylic acid.

39 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising

co-extruding a structural polymer in combination with the hydrophilic polymer.

40 . The method of claim 39 , wherein the structural polymer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of nylon, PEBAX, polyurethane, polyethylene, PEEK, polyimide, polyester-amide copolymer, and polyether-amide copolymer.

44 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising:

cross-linking a portion of the polymer.

45 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising:

exposing at least one portion of the hydrophilic polymer and the plurality of paramagnetic ions incorporated therein.

46 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising applying a lubricious coating to the medical device.

47 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising applying a coating that contains a therapeutic agent to the medical device.

85 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the composition is extruded in a striped pattern.

86 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the composition is extruded in a spiraled pattern.

87 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the medical device is a catheter.
