Abstract

In an endodontic procedure, after the working of a root canal by instruments to remove material and shape the walls of the canal, irrigant is supplied via a microcannula. A vacuum is applied via a tube which is inserted partway down the root canal. The tube and microcannula pass through a material created by a standard dental filling material of a composite nature Which provides a seal at a position near the top of the coronal opening. The irrigant is supplied in a manner sufficient to ensure delivery to a side vent of the microcannula. The vacuum at the end of tube draws the irrigant and debris up from the apex of the root canal into the tube. The side vent may have a plurality of more round holes, a diagonal slit or a U shaped slit, or any other shape. The vent opening should not extend more than approximately 0.75 mm from the closed spherical tip of the microcannula, it must be burr free any the opening must be smaller than the internal diameter of the microcannula.

Claims (44)

1. A method for irrigating a root canal of a tooth having a coronal end and an apex end, said canal having been shaped after removal of pulp material, said method comprising:

a.) inserting cannula into the coronal end of the canal such that an end of said cannula is disposed partway within said canal, said end of said cannula having an opening:

b.) performing an evacuation of a coronal portion of the root canal by applying a vacuum to the cannula;

c.) placing a fluid delivery tube adjacent the coronal end of the canal;

d.) supplying a fluid to said fluid delivery tube wherein the fluid is drawing to said opening of the cannula, said fluid being withdrawn from said canal by operation of said vacuum;

e.) removing the fluid delivery tube and cannula and inserting a microcannula in the canal, said microcannula having a smaller diameter than said cannula and sized so as to enable insertion of microcannula substantially completely to said apex end, said micro-cannula being closed at said apex end and positioned such that a side vent of said microcannula is adjacent said apex end;

f.) performing an evacuation of an apical portion of the root canal by applying a vacuum to said cannula and delivering fluid to said microcannula wherein the fluid is drawn from said side vent of the microcannula and is withdrawn from said canal by operation of said vacuum through said cannula.

2. The method defined by claim 1 wherein said cannula is comprised of a plastic material.

3. The method defined by claim 1 wherein the end of said cannula is disposed approximately 5 mm from said apex end.

4. The method defined by claim 1 wherein said microcannula is comprised of stainless steel.

5. The method defined by claim 1 wherein said coronal portion evacuation causes debris inside the canal to be withdrawn.

6. A method for irrigating a root canal of a tooth having a coronal end with an access cavity and an apex end, said canal having been shaped after removal of pulp material, comprising:

a.) inserting at least a portion of a cannula into the canal access cavity, said cannula comprising a molded structure having a body portion and at least two tubes extending therefrom, one of said tubes comprises a fluid delivery tube for delivering a fluid into the canal, and the other of said tubes comprises a vacuum tube for connecting to an apparatus for evacuation; and

b) supplying a fluid to the canal via the cannula by operation of the apparatus for evacuation;

wherein said fluid delivery tube is fully extended into the canal for performing an evacuation including the apex portion of the root canal.

7. The method of 6 wherein said fluid delivery tube comprises a metal tube.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said body portion and said other tube comprise a polymeric material.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein at least a portion of said fluid delivery tube is surrounded by the other tube.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein each tube comprises an interior bore, said bores do not communicate with each other independent of the canal.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein said other tube is adapted for positioning over the canal.

12. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of providing a seal disposed at a position near the top of the coronal opening to seal the canal.

13. The method of claim 6 wherein said microcannula comprises an uncovered end that is substantially closed.

14. The method of claim 6 wherein said delivery tube comprises a microcannula.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said microcannula comprises a substantially closed uncovered end having a side vent disposed adjacent the uncovered end.

16. A method for irrigating a root canal of a tooth having a coronal end with an access cavity and an apex end, said canal having been shaped after removal of pulp material, comprising:

a.) inserting at least a portion of a cannula into the canal access cavity, said cannula comprising a molded structure having a body portion and at least two tubes extending therefrom, one of said tubes comprises a fluid delivery tube for delivering a fluid into the canal, and the other of said tubes comprises a vacuum tube for connecting to an apparatus for evacuation; and

b) supplying a fluid to the canal via the cannula by operation of the apparatus for evacuation;

wherein said process further comprising the steps of first performing an evacuation of a coronal portion of the root canal and followed by performing an evacuation of the apex portion of the root canal.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein said fluid delivery tube is disposed partway inside the canal for performing an evacuation of a coronal portion of the root canal.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein both tubes are positioned towards the coronal portion of the canal.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein said fluid delivery tube extends farther from the body than the vacuum tube and does not communicate with the vacuum tube.

20. The method of claim 16 wherein said fluid delivery tube comprises a metal.

21. The method of claim 16 wherein said body portion and said vacuum tube comprise a polymeric material.

22. The method of claim 16 wherein said fluid delivery tube comprises a microcannula.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein said microcannula comprises a substantially dosed uncovered end having a side vent disposed adjacent the uncovered end.

24. The method of claim 22 wherein said microcannula comprises a closed uncovered end having a side vent disposed adjacent the uncovered end.

25. A kit, for irrigating a root canal of a tooth having a coronal end and an apex end, comprises:

at least one cannula comprising a substantially cylindrical body and a diameter;

at least one microcannula comprising a substantially cylindrical body and a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the cannula;

a master delivery tube comprising a molded structure having a body portion, a fluid delivery tube and a vacuum tube, bath tubes extending therefrom the body portion; and

a handle adapted for coupling to each of the microcannula and cannula interchangeably, said handle having a first opening at one end sized to hold each of said microcannula and said cannula by friction, and a second opening at a second end adapted for connecting to a vacuum by friction.

26. The kit of claim 25 wherein said vacuum tube surrounds at least a portion of the fluid delivery tube.

27. The kit of claim 25 wherein said microcannula is open at one end and closed at a second end with a side vent disposed adjacent the second end.

28. The kit of claim 27 , wherein the side vent comprises a plurality of holes, a generally diagonal slit, a U shaped slit, or combinations thereof.
