Abstract

A fuser member adapted to fuse toner onto the surface of a recording medium as the recording medium passes a nip area of the fuser member comprises a electrically conductive polymer layer, a resistive layer, and an electrically conductive layer. The fuser member further comprises a current supply element and a current return element, wherein the current supply element and the current return element are configured to provide current flow through the electrically conductive polymer layer and the resistive layer to generate fusing heat at the nip area.

Claims (26)

1. A fuser member adapted to fuse toner on the surface of a recording medium passing a nip area of the fuser member, comprising:

a continuous electrically conductive polymer layer comprising conductive filler;

a resistive layer;

an electrically conductive layer; and

a current supply element and a current return element, the current supply element and current return element being operable to provide current flow through the electrically conductive polymer layer and the resistive layer to generate fusing heat at the nip area.

2. A fuser member according to claim 1 , wherein the electrically conductive polymer layer comprises polyimide, polyamideimide, or polyetherimide.

3. A fuser member according to claim 1 wherein the conductive filler comprises carbon black.

4. A fuser member according to claim 1 , wherein the fuser member comprises a belt.

5. A fuser member according to claim 1 , wherein the fuser member comprises a roll.

6. A fuser member according to claim 1 , further comprising a release layer located at an outer surface of the fuser member.

7. A fuser member according to claim 6 , wherein the release layer is operable to transfer fusing heat to a recording medium as a recording medium passes the fusing nip area.

8. A fuser member according to claim 1 wherein the current supply element comprises a roll, brush, plate or combination thereof and the current return element comprises a roll, brush, or plate or combination thereof.

9. A fuser member according to claim 1 , wherein the resistive layer comprises an oxide or nitride.

10. A fuser member according to claim 9 , wherein the oxide or nitride comprises aluminum, silicon, or boron.

11. A fuser unit adapted to fuse toner on the surface of a recording medium comprising:

a fuser member comprising a continuous electrically conductive polymer layer comprising conductive filler, a resistive layer, an electrically conductive layer, a current supply element, and a current return element, the current supply element and current return element being operable to provide current flow through the electrically conductive polymer layer and the resistive layer in order to generate fusing heat at the nip area; and

a backup roll adjacent the nip area.

12. A fuser unit according to claim 11 wherein the fuser member further comprises a primer layer, and a release layer.

13. A fuser unit according to claim 11 wherein the backup roll comprises a sleeved silicone foam roll.

14. A fuser unit according to claim 11 wherein the electrically conductive polymer layer comprises polyimide, polyamideimide, or polyetherimide.

15. A fuser unit according to claim 11 , wherein the conductive filler comprises carbon black.

16. A fuser unit according to claim 11 , wherein the fuser member comprises a belt.

17. A fuser unit according to claim 11 wherein the fuser member comprises a roll.

18. A fuser unit according to claim 11 further comprising a release layer located on the outer surface of the fuser member.

19. A fuser unit according to claim 18 wherein the release layer is operable to transfer fusing heat to the recording medium as the recording medium passes the fusing nip area.

20. A fuser unit according to claim 11 , wherein the resistive layer comprises an oxide or nitride.
