Abstract

A method of detecting an over-actuation condition within a micro electro-mechanical device is provided. The device is of a type having a support structure and an actuating arm that is movable relative to the support structure as a result of thermal expansion of at least part of the actuating arm due to heat inducing current flow through that part. The method comprises passing a current pulse having a predetermined duration t p through the part of the actuating arm, detecting the rate of movement of the actuating arm to a predetermined position beyond an operating position of the actuating arm, and determining whether the detected rate is greater than a normal rate for desired actuation of the actuating arm so as to detect the over-actuation condition.

Claims (12)

1. A method of detecting an over-actuation condition within a micro electro-mechanical device of a type having a support structure and an actuating arm that is movable relative to the support structure as a result of thermal expansion of at least part of the actuating arm due to heat inducing current flow through at least said part, the method comprising the steps of:

passing at least one current pulse having a predetermined duration t p through at least said part of the actuating arm;

detecting the rate of movement of the actuating arm to a predetermined position beyond an operating position of the actuating arm; and

determining whether the detected rate is greater than a normal rate for desired actuation of the actuating arm so as to detect the over-actuation condition.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 including providing a movement sensor associated with the actuating arm, the movement sensor detecting the rate of movement of the actuating arm when the actuating arm moves beyond said operating position.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein:

the movement sensor comprises a moving contact element formed integrally with the actuating arm, a fixed contact element formed integrally with the support structure and electric circuit elements formed within the support structure; and

detection of the rate of movement is initiated by contact between the fixed and moving contact elements at said predetermined position of the actuating arm.

4. A method as claimed in claim 1 when employed in relation to a liquid ejection nozzle having a liquid receiving chamber from which the liquid is ejected with movement of the actuating arm to said operating position.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the liquid is ink.

6. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a single current pulse having the predetermined pulse t p is induced to pass through at least said part of the actuating arm and detection is made for movement of the actuating arm to said predetermined position consequential on the passage of the single current pulse.

A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein a series of current pulses of successively increasing duration t p are induced to pass through at least said part of the actuating arm over a time period t and detection is made for movement of the actuating arm to said predetermined position within a predetermined time window t w where t>t w >t p .
