Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods measure, diagnose, and/or treat one or both eyes of a patient. Adaptive optics systems (such as those having a deformable mirror) may be configured to an aspherical or multi-spherical presbyopia-mitigating prescriptive shape to allow objective and/or subjective measurements of a candidate prescription. A plurality of viewing distances allow subjective and/or objective evaluations of performance using a light spot or a test viewing image. Measurements of aberrations at selected viewing conditions (including distances and/or brightness) with correlating pupil sizes may also be provided. Wavefront measurement systems and methods may help position and isolate the eye from ambient light.

Claims (15)

1. An optical diagnostic method comprising:

optically coupling a viewing target with a first eye using an adaptive optics system;

configuring the adaptive optics system so as to correspond to a candidate presbyopia-mitigating refractive correction, the candidate correction comprising an aspherical or multifocal prescription;

determining performance of the candidate correction by imaging the viewing target with the eye via the configured adaptive optics system while the viewing target is separated from the eye by a first viewing distance; and

determining presbyopia-mitigating performance of the candidate correction by imaging the viewing target with the eye via the configured adaptive optics system while the viewing target is separated from the eye by a second viewing distance, the second viewing distance being different than the first viewing distance.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the performance of the eye at the first and second viewing distances is determined at least in part by measuring a wavefront aberration of the ocular optical system at the first and second viewing distances.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adaptive optics system is configured to compensate for irregular aberrations of the eye while determining performance of the candidate correction.

4. An optical diagnostic method comprising:

viewing a target with an eye under a first set of viewing conditions;

measuring a first pupil size and a first aberration of the eye under the first viewing conditions;

viewing with the eye under a second set of viewing conditions that are different than the first set of viewing conditions so as to induce the eye to change from the first pupil size to a second pupil size; and

measuring the second pupil size and a second aberration of the eye under the second viewing conditions.

The method of claim 4 , further comprising modeling a candidate presbyopia-mitigating shape generated in response to the first pupil size, the second pupil size, and aberrations of the eye with the first pupil size, and viewing the target with the eye along an optical train including the model of the presbyopia-mitigating shape.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first set of viewing conditions comprises a first brightness, and wherein the second set of viewing conditions comprises a second brightness that is sufficiently different than the first brightness to alter pupil dilation.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first set of viewing condition comprises a first viewing distance, and wherein the second set of viewing conditions comprises a second viewing distance that is sufficiently different that the first viewing distance to alter pupil dilation.
