Abstract

One method for welding includes obtaining a heat-exchanger tube having an outward fold. The tube is inserted at least partially through the orifice of a tubesheet with the fold contacting one of the outward and inward facing sides of the tubesheet. A first electrode is positioned in contact with the outward fold and a second electrode in contact with the one side of the tubesheet. Another method for welding includes obtaining a heat-exchanger tube having a tube end. The tube is inserted at least partially through the orifice of a tubesheet. A first electrode is positioned in contact with the first tube end and a second electrode is positioned in contact with one of the outward and inward facing sides of the tubesheet. The first electrode is moved against the first tube end to create an outward fold with the outward fold contacting the one side of the tubesheet.

Claims (45)

1. A method for welding comprising the steps of:

a) obtaining a heat-exchanger tube having first and second tube ends, having a tube wall, having a tube centerline, and having a first outward fold disposed toward the first tube end, wherein the first outward fold includes a first portion of the tube wall which extends outward from the tube centerline and then turns and extends back inward toward the tube centerline as one travels along the tube toward the first tube end;

b) obtaining a heat-exchanger first tubesheet having an outward-facing side and an opposing inward-facing side and having an orifice;

c) inserting the tube at least partially through the orifice of the first tubesheet with the first outward fold contacting one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet;

d) disposing a first electrode in physical contact with the first outward fold;

e) disposing a second electrode in physical contact with the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet; and

f) using the disposed first and second electrodes to resistance weld the first outward fold of the tube to the first tubesheet.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein step c) inserts the tube completely through the orifice of the first tubesheet.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet is the outward-facing side of the first tubesheet.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet is the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein step f) includes moving the first electrode to deform the first outward fold against the first tubesheet.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first outward fold is disposed proximate the first tube end of the tube.

7. The method of claim 6 , also including the steps of:

g) obtaining a heat-exchanger second tubesheet having an outward-facing side and an opposing inward-facing side and having an orifice;

h) inserting the tube at least partially through the orifice of the second tubesheet;

i) creating a second outward fold in the tube toward the second tube end of the tube,

wherein the second outward fold includes a second portion of the tube wall which extends outward from the tube centerline and then turns and extends back inward toward the tube centerline as one travels along the tube toward the second tube end;

j) disposing the second outward fold in contact with one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the second tubesheet; and

k) after steps g) through j), resistance welding the second outward fold of the tube to the second tubesheet.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein step h) inserts the tube completely through the orifice of the second tubsheet.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein step k) includes disposing the first electrode in contact with the second outward fold and disposing the second electrode in contact with the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the second tubesheet.

10. The method of claim 7 , also including, before steps h) through k), the steps of obtaining a baffle having a through hole and inserting the tube completely through the through hole.

11. A method for welding comprising the steps of:

a) obtaining a heat-exchanger tube having first and second tube ends, having a tube wall, and having a tube centerline;

b) obtaining a heat-exchanger first tubesheet having an outward-facing side and an opposing inward-facing side and having an orifice;

c) inserting the tube at least partially through the orifice of the first tubesheet;

d) disposing a first electrode in physical contact with the first tube end of the tube;

e) disposing a second electrode in physical contact with one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet;

f) moving the disposed first electrode against the first tube end to create a first outward fold in the tube toward the first tube end with the first outward fold contacting the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet, wherein the first outward fold includes a first portion of the tube wall which extends outward from the tube centerline and then turns and extends back inward toward the tube centerline as one travels along the tube toward the first tube end; and

g) using the disposed first and second electrodes to resistance weld the first outward fold of the tube to the first tubesheet.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein step c) inserts the tube completely through the orifice of the first tubesheet.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet is the outward-facing side of the first tubesheet.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet is the inward-facing side of the first tubesheet.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein step g) includes moving the first electrode to deform the first outward fold against the first tubesheet.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first outward fold is disposed proximate the first tube end of the tube.

17. The method of claim 16 , also including the steps of:

h) obtaining a heat-exchanger second tubesheet having an outward-facing side and an opposing inward-facing side and having an orifice;

i) inserting the tube at least partially through the orifice of the second tubesheet;

j) creating a second outward fold in the tube toward the second tube end of the tube,

wherein the second outward fold includes a second portion of the tube wall which extends outward from the tube centerline and then turns and extends back inward toward the tube centerline as one travels along the tube toward the second tube end;

k) disposing the second outward fold in contact with one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the second tubesheet; and

l) after steps h) through k), resistance welding the second outward fold of the tube to the second tubesheet.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein step i) inserts the tube completely through the orifice of the second tubesheet.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein step j) includes moving the first electrode against the second tube end to create the second outward fold in the tube, and wherein step k) includes disposing the second electrode in contact with the one of the outward-facing side and the inward-facing side of the second tubesheet.

20. The method of claim 17 , also including, before steps i) through l), the steps of obtaining a baffle having a through hole and inserting the tube completely through the through hole.
