Abstract

An apparatus for determining spherical and cylinder components of subjective refraction of a patient's vision includes a wavefront measurement device that can produce a measure of quality of vision in a return beam from the patient's eye viewing a target through a corrective test lens in the apparatus. The corrective lenses may be varied and a plurality of measurements of quality of vision may be obtained and analyzed to determine the spherical and cylinder components. Accordingly, the eye examiner may conduct a refraction examination without a subjective response from the patient.

Claims (19)

1. A method of determining refraction of a patient's eye, comprising:

obtaining a plurality of sets of wavefront measurements of the eye while the eye is successively subjected to a plurality of different refractive corrections, each set of wavefront measurements containing a plurality of measurements while the eye is subjected to a single refractive correction;

identifying at least one of said plurality of different refractive corrections as corresponding to at least one subjective refractive correction for the eye based on comparison of the plurality of sets of wavefront measurements; and

determining a subjective astigmatic correction based at least in part on the at least one subjective refraction correction,

wherein said plurality of different refractive corrections comprise a plurality of different spherical corrections and said at least one subjective refractive correction comprises at least one subjective spherical correction, wherein the at least one subjective spherical correction is used to calculate said subjective astigmatic correction, wherein said at least one subjective spherical correction comprises a first spherical correction (D1) selected based on measurements when said eye is viewing a target image oriented in a first direction and a second spherical correction (D2)selected based on measurements when said eye is viewing the target images oriented in a second direction.

2. A system for measuring refraction in a patient's eye, comprising:

a target image comprising at least one feature that may be oriented in a desired orientation for viewing by said eye, a stigmatism in said eye being substantially undetectable by said eye when said target is suitably oriented;

a wavefront sensor for measuring wavefronts emanating from the eye;

test optics disposed along an optical path between said eye and said target image, said test optics being changeable to introduce different amounts of defocus; and

a processor configured to receive output from said wavefront sensor and to determine the a stigmatism for said eye therefrom, said processor further configured to perform the following acts:

obtain a plurality of sets of wavefront measurements of the eye while the eye is successively subjected to a plurality of different refractive corrections, each set of wavefront measurements containing a plurality of measurements while the eye is subjected to a single refractive correction;

identify at least one of said plurality of different refractive corrections as corresponding to at least one subjective refractive correction for the eye based on comparison of the plurality of sets of wavefront measurements; and

determine a subjective correction based at least in part on the at least one subjective refraction correction,

wherein said plurality of different refractive corrections comprise a plurality of different spherical corrections and said at least one subjective refractive correction comprises at least one subjective spherical correction, wherein the at least one subjective spherical correction is used tocalculate said subjective correction, wherein said at least one subjective spherical correction comprises a first spherical correction (D1) selected based on measurements when said eye is viewing said target image oriented in a first direction and a second spherical correction (D2)selected based on measurements when said eye is viewing the target image oriented in a second direction.

3. A computer readable medium containing executable instructions that when executed perform a method of determining refraction of a patient's eye, the method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of sets of wavefront measurements of the eye while the eye is successively subjected to a plurality of different refractive corrections, each set of wavefront measurements containing a plurality of measurements while the eye is subjected to a single refractive correction;

identifying at least one of said plurality of different refractive corrections as corresponding to at least one subjective refractive correction for the eye based on comparison of the plurality ofsets of wavefront measurements; and

determining a subjective astigmatic correction based at least in part on the at least one subjective refraction correction,

wherein said plurality of different refractive corrections comprise a plurality of different spherical corrections and said at least one subjective refractive correction comprises at least one subjective spherical correction, wherein the at least one subjective spherical correction is used to calculate said subjective cylinder correction, wherein said at least one subjective spherical correction comprises a first spherical correction (D1) selected based on measurements when said eye is viewing a target image oriented in a first direction and a second spherical correction (D2) selected based on measurements when said eye is viewing the target images oriented in a second direction.
