Abstract

This invention relates generally to expandable intraluminal medical devices for use within a body passageway or duct, and more particularly to an optimized stent having asymmetrical strut and loop members, wherein at least one pair adjacent radial strut members have unequal axial lengths.

Claims (18)

1. A stent comprising:

one or more hoop sections having a tubular configuration with proximal and distal open ends defining a longitudinal axis extending there between, each hoop section being formed from a plurality of radial strut members and one or more radial arc members connecting adjacent radial struts to form a sinusoidal wave pattern, wherein at least one amplitude of the sinusoidal wave pattern is greater than the adjacent amplitude of the sinusoidal wave pattern when measured relative to the longitudinal axis, and wherein at least one radial arc member has non-uniform cross-sections to achieve near-uniform stress, strain, or stress and strain distribution along the radial arc when the radial arc undergoes deformation.

2. The stent of claim 1 wherein the at least one radial arc member that has non-uniform cross-sections has substantially equivalent cross-sectional areas.

3. The stent of claim 1 wherein the at least one radial arc member that has non-uniform cross-sections has substantially non-equivalent cross-sectional areas.

4. A stent comprising:

one or more hoop components having a tubular configuration with proximal and distal open ends defining a longitudinal axis extending there between, each hoop component being formed from a plurality of radial strut members, and a plurality of radial arc members connecting adjacent radial struts, wherein at least one radial arc member has a different geometry from the immediately adjacent radial arc, and wherein at least one radial arc member has non-uniform cross-sections to achieve near-uniform strain distribution along the radial arc when the radial arc undergoes deformation.

5. The stent of claim 4 wherein the different geometry of the at least one radial arc member includes having different arc cross-sections.

6. The stent of claim 4 wherein the different geometry of the at least one radial arc member includes having different arc radii.

7. The stent of claim 4 wherein the different geometry of the at least one radial arc member includes having different arc lengths.

8. A stent comprising:

a plurality of hoop sections having a tubular configuration with proximal and distal open ends defining a longitudinal axis extending there between, wherein each hoop section is formed from a plurality of radial strut members and a plurality of radial arc members connecting adjacent radial struts to form a sinusoidal wave pattern progressing circumferentially along the hoop section, each of the plurality of radial arc members having a circumferential amplitude measured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis about the circumference of the hoop section, wherein at least one pair of circumferentially adjacent radial strut members have unequal lengths when measured relative to the longitudinal axis, and wherein at least one radial arc member has non-uniform cross-sections to achieve near-uniform stress, strain, or stress and strain distribution along the radial arc when the radial arc undergoes deformation; and

one or more flex connectors connecting longitudinally adjacent hoop sections, each at one radial arc per hoop section, each flex connector is formed from a substantially circumferentially oriented flexible strut member and two flexible arc members, one flexible arc member being connected at each end of the flexible strut member, each flex connector having a circumferential amplitude measured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis about the circumference of the stent, wherein the circumferential amplitude of the flexible connector is at least 1.5 times greater than the circumferential amplitude of the connected radial arc.

9. The stent of claim 8 wherein each flex connector comprises a flexible component.

10. The stent of claim 9 wherein the flexible component comprises a flexible strut, with the flexible strut being connected at each end by one flexible arc.

11. The stent of claim 10 wherein the flexible arc has non-uniform cross-sections to achieve near-uniform stress distribution along the flex component when the flex component undergoes deformation.

12. The stent of claim 8 having a plurality of flex connectors, wherein each flex connector is shaped so as to nest together into the circumferentially adjacent flex connector.

13. The stent of claim 8 , wherein the unequal lengths of the adjacent radial strut members allows the radial arc connecting said adjacent radial strut members to nest into the adjacent radial strut member.

14. The stent of claim 8 , wherein the amplitude of the flex connector is greater than the longitudinal length of the flex connector.
