Abstract

An apparatus and method for real-time buying and selling of Internet Protocol (IP) transit is described. Embodiments include a platform for routing IP traffic in real time from at least one network user to a plurality of backbone providers. Embodiments further include sellers specifying a quality, a quantity, and a duration of a contract available, buyers identifying and selecting an appropriate contract, and executing the selected contract. Embodiments further include assigning different ranks to different backbone providers based on network monitoring. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Claims (20)

1. A system for routing internet traffic over a plurality of backbone providers, the system comprising:

an internet router having (i) a plurality of input ports to receive a plurality of incoming data packets from one or more network users and (ii) a plurality of output ports, wherein each output port is coupled to an internet backbone provider, the internet router including:

traffic measuring circuitry to (i) determine (a) incoming traffic levels on the input ports and (b) types of data of the incoming data packets and, in response thereto, (ii) generate traffic level information;

congestion monitoring circuitry, coupled to the output ports, to monitor traffic conditions on the plurality of backbone providers and to responsively generate traffic condition information corresponding thereto;

switch controller, coupled to the traffic measuring circuitry, to generate control signals for the switching circuitry using the traffic level information and routing instructions; and

switching circuitry, coupled to the switch controller, to connect selected input ports to the selected output ports in response to the control signals from the switch controller; and

a route optimizer, coupled to the internet router, to generate routing instructions for incoming data packets using: (1) available bandwidth capacity information corresponding to each backbone provider, (2) financial costs of routing data packets on the backbone providers, (3) the traffic condition information, and (4) the types of data of the incoming data packets.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the route optimizer ranks a plurality of the backbone providers, on a destination-by-destination basis, based on bandwidth capacity corresponding to each backbone provider.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the route optimizer ranks a plurality of the backbone providers based on financial costs of routing data packets over the backbone provider.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the route optimizer ranks a plurality of the backbone providers based on the traffic condition information corresponding to the backbone provider which is generated by the congestion monitoring circuitry.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the traffic condition information associated with a given backbone provider corresponds to an amount of time for a data packet to reach a given destination.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the information corresponding to the amount of time for a data packet to reach the destination is determined by pinging the destination via the backbone provider.

7. The system of claim 5 wherein the route optimizer statistically measures a response time for each backbone provider for different destinations and, based thereon, assigns the backbone provider to one of a plurality of ranges of response times.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the route optimizer statistically measures a response time for each backbone provider for the different destinations by repeatedly pinging the backbone providers for each of the different destinations served by the backbone provider.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the route optimizer measures a response time for each backbone provider for different destinations and, based thereon, assigns the backbone provider to one of a plurality of ranges of response times for each of the different destinations.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein each range of response times is associated with one of a plurality of types of data.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the types of data include video, voice over IP, corporate traffic and/or standard ISP traffic.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein the information corresponding to the amount of time for a data packet to reach the destination is determined by pinging the different destination via the backbone provider a statistically significant number of times.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the route optimizer includes a central processing unit and memory.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the route optimizer generates routing instructions for incoming data packets at each input port using a ranked list of backbone providers, wherein the route optimizer generates the ranked list of backbone providers based on financial costs of routing data packets over the backbone provider and the traffic condition information corresponding to the backbone provider.
