Abstract

A printhead assembly includes a chassis. An ink reservoir is mounted on the chassis. The ink reservoir defines a number of ink vessels for retaining respective inks, each ink vessel having a series of feed openings. A plurality of serially arranged printhead modules is mounted on the ink reservoir. Each printhead module includes an ink chamber structure that defines a number of ink chambers and complementary feed openings that engage respective feed openings of the ink reservoir so that each ink vessel is in fluid communication with a respective ink chamber. A printhead chip is mounted on each ink chamber structure to receive ink from the ink chambers. A TAB film is attached to the printhead chip to supply the printhead chip with power and control signals.

Claims (14)

1. A printhead assembly that comprises:

a chassis;

an ink reservoir mounted on the chassis, the ink reservoir defining a number of ink vessels for retaining respective inks, each ink vessel having a series of feed openings; and

a plurality of serially arranged printhead modules mounted on the ink reservoir, each printhead module comprising

an ink chamber structure that defines a number of ink chambers and complementary feed openings that engage respective feed openings of the ink reservoir so that each ink vessel is in fluid communication with a respective ink chamber;

a printhead integrated circuit mounted on each ink chamber structure to receive ink from the ink chambers; and

a tape automated bond (TAB) film attached to the printhead integrated circuit to supply the printhead integrated circuit with power and control signals.

2. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the ink reservoir includes a number of series of ink feed nozzles defining the feed openings, each series of ink feed nozzles being in fluid communication with a respective ink vessel.

3. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 2 , in which the complementary feed openings of the ink chamber structure are flared and incorporate a collar of a hydrophobic material sealingly to engage respective ink feed nozzles of the ink reservoir.

4. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which the ink reservoir and the ink chamber structures include complementary snap-fitting arrangements to permit the printhead modules to be snap-fitted to the ink reservoir.

5. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which each TAB film is at least partially interposed between the printhead integrated circuit and the ink chamber structure to define floors of the ink chambers.

6. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which each ink chamber structure is the product of a precision micro-molding process.

7. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 6 , in which each ink chamber structure is of an acetyl-based material.

8. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , in which each ink chamber structure defines a plurality of rib formations that are oriented to provide support for the respective TAB films, such that, in use, the TAB films bear against the rib formations.
