Abstract

Anatomic points within the body are projected outside the body through the use of extenders. Bridges may be used to keep the extenders parallel to each other to provide a spatial transformation of the anatomic points to projected points outside the body. The projected points may then be used for measurement, or to facilitate the selection or configuration of an implant that is to be positioned proximate the anatomic points. Such an implant may be a rod for a posterior spinal fusion system. Pedicle screws may be implanted into pedicles of the spine, and may then serve as anchors for the extenders. The extenders may have rod interfaces that receive the rod in a manner that mimics the geometry of the pedicle screws so that the contoured rod will properly fit into engagement with the pedicle screws.

Claims (43)

1. A system for configuring or selecting a spinal fusion rod for affixation to one or more vertebrae in a body of a patient to restrict relative motion of the vertebrae, the system comprising:

a first extender comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion configured to engage a first fixation member implanted in a first vertebra of the spine, the first fixation member having a rod interface for receiving a spinal fusion rod in an implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a first anatomic point at the first fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position;

a second extender comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion configured to engage a second fixation member implanted in a second vertebra of the spine, the second fixation member having a rod interface for receiving the spinal fusion rod in the implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a second anatomic point at the second fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position; and

a first bridge configured to constrain an orientation of the first extender with respect to the second extender to provide a spatial transformation of the first and second anatomic points to first and second projected points outside the body, the first and second projected points being located at the proximal portions of the first and second extenders, respectively;

wherein the proximal portions of the first and second extenders include rod interfaces proximate the first and second projected points, the rod interfaces of the first and second extenders having substantially the same size and shape as the rod interfaces of the respective first and second fixation members, so as to support the spinal fusion rod in a supported position such that the spinal fusion rod passes through the first and second projected points, to facilitate configuration or selection of the spinal fusion rod based on locations of the first and second projected points; and

wherein the first bridge is configured to engage the first and second extenders in a region below the rod interfaces of the first and second extenders and above the distal portions.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the first extender is shaped to mate with the rod interface of the first fixation member, and wherein the distal portion of the second extender is shaped to mate with the rod interface of the second fixation member.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first anatomic point is proximate a first pedicle of the spine, and the second anatomic point is proximate a second pedicle of the spine, the first and second fixation members being implanted in the respective first and second pedicles.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first bridge is configured to keep the first and second extenders parallel to each other while permitting substantially free relative translation between the first and second extenders.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the first bridge comprises:

a first slider is configured to be coupled to a shaft of the first extender such that the first slider extends substantially perpendicular to the shaft and is rotatable about and slidable along the shaft; and

a second slider configured to be coupled to a shaft of the second extender such that the second slider extends substantially perpendicular to the shaft and is rotatable about and slidable along the shaft;

wherein the first and second sliders are configured to be slidably coupled together.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a third extender comprising a distal portion configured to engage a third fixation member implanted in a third vertebra of the spine, the third fixation member having a rod interface for receiving a spinal fusion rod in the implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a third anatomic point at the third fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position; and

a second bridge configured to constrain an orientation of the second extender with respect to the third extender such that the system provides a spatial transformation of the first, second, and third anatomic points to first, second, and third projected points outside the body.

7. A system for configuring or selecting a spinal fusion rod for implantation proximate a spine of a body of a patient, the system comprising:

a first extender comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion configured to engage a first fixation member implanted in a first vertebra of the spine such that the proximal portion is positioned outside the body, the first fixation member having a rod interface for receiving a spinal fusion rod in an implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a first anatomic point at the first fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position; and

a second extender comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion configured to engage a second fixation member implanted in a second vertebra of the spine such that the proximal portion is positioned outside the body, the second fixation member having a rod interface for receiving the spinal fusion rod in the implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a second anatomic point at the second fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position;

wherein the proximal portions of the first and second extenders comprise rod interfaces rigidly connected to the proximal portions, the rod interfaces of the first and second extenders having substantially the same size and shape as the rod interfaces of the respective first and second fixation members, so as to support the spinal fusion rod to prevent movement of the spinal fusion rod in a direction towards the distal portions of the extenders, in order to facilitate configuration or selection of the spinal fusion rod independently of deformation of the first and second extenders.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the distal portion of the first extender is shaped to mate with the rod interface of the first fixation member, and wherein the distal portion of the second extender is shaped to mate with the rod interface of the second fixation member.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first anatomic point is proximate a first pedicle of the spine, and the second anatomic point is proximate a second pedicle of the spine, the first and second fixation members being implanted in the respective first and second pedicles.

10. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a first bridge configured to keep the first and second extenders parallel to each other while permitting substantially free relative translation between the first and second extenders.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a third extender comprising a distal portion configured to engage a third fixation member implanted in a third vertebra of the spine, the third fixation member having a rod interface for receiving a spinal fusion rod in the implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a third anatomic point at the third fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position; and

a second bridge configured to keep the second and third extenders parallel to each other while permitting substantially free relative translation between the second and third extenders.

12. A system for configuring or selecting a spinal fusion rod for implantation proximate a spine of a body of a patient, the system comprising:

a first extender comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion configured to engage a first fixation member implanted in a first vertebra of the spine such that the proximal portion is positioned outside the body, the first fixation member having a rod interface for receiving a spinal fusion rod in an implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a first anatomic point at the first fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position; and

a second extender comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion configured to engage a second fixation member implanted in a second vertebra of the spine such that the proximal portion is positioned outside the body, the second fixation member having a rod interface for receiving the spinal fusion rod in the implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a second anatomic point at the second fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position;

wherein the proximal portions of the first and second extenders comprise rod interfaces having substantially the same size and shape as the rod interfaces of the respective first and second fixation members, such that the rod interfaces of the proximal portions of the first and second extenders can receive the spinal fusion rod outside the body to facilitate configuration or selection of the spinal fusion rod independently of deformation of the first and second extenders.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first anatomic point is proximate a first pedicle of the spine, and the second anatomic point is proximate a second pedicle of the spine, the first and second fixation members being implanted in the respective first and second pedicles.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the distal portion of the first extender is shaped to mate with the rod interface of the first fixation member, and wherein the distal portion of the second extender is shaped to mate with the rod interface of the second fixation member.

15. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a first bridge configured to keep the first and second extenders parallel to each other while permitting substantially free relative translation between the first and second extenders.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

a third extender comprising a distal portion configured to engage a third fixation member implanted in a third vertebra of the spine, the third fixation member having a rod interface for receiving a spinal fusion rod in the implanted position, wherein the spinal fusion rod passes through a third anatomic point at the third fixation member when the spinal fusion rod is in the implanted position; and

a second bridge configured to keep the second and third extenders parallel to each other while permitting substantially free relative translation between the second and third extenders.

17. The system of claim 12 , further comprising:

a first cannula having a proximal end and a distal end, the first cannula being adapted to telescopically receive the first extender therein with the distal end of the first cannula being positioned proximate the first fixation member; and

a second cannula having a proximal end and a distal end, the second cannula being adapted to telescopically receive the second extender therein with the distal end of the second cannula being positioned proximate the second fixation member.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the distal end of the first cannula is adapted to rigidly dock with the first fixation member, and wherein the distal end of the second cannula is adapted to rigidly dock with the second fixation member.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein a side wall of the first cannula includes a first slot and a second slot, and wherein a side wall of the second cannula includes a first slot and a second slot.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the first and second slots of the first cannula are located at the distal end of the first cannula, and wherein the first and second slots of the second cannula are located at the distal end of the second cannula.

The system of claim 19 , wherein the first and second slots of the first cannula are arranged on opposing sides of the first cannula, so as to permit the spinal fusion rod to extend through the first and second slots of the first cannula along a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the first cannula, and wherein the first and second slots of the second cannula are arranged on opposing sides of the second cannula, so as to permit the spinal fusion rod to extend through the first and second slots of the second cannula along a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the second cannula.
